Techniques With Cosmic Shimmer Metallic Gilding Polish
      December 13, 2017

Today I’m working with Cosmic Shimmer Metallic Gilding Polish, a water based pearlescent product that goes on easily, dries quickly, and produces a lustrous metallic/pearlescent effect.

A nice feature of this product is the applicator built into the cap.  That means no dipping your fingers into the jar, potentially contaminating the product and causing a bloom of mold.  It will do the job of applying the product most of the time, though as you’ll see in the video, to get really crisp results with a stencil I’ll switch to an Ink Blending Tool.  That’s really the only time I switched off – the applicator doe the rest quite effectively.  If you like working with your fingers (as I do), it’s simple enough to dab some onto your work surface using the applicator, then switch to your fingers.

There are a lot of ways to incorporate Gilding Polish into your art in addition to creating backgrounds.  You can stamp with it, apply it through a stencil, use it like paint by thinning it with water, and then spattering what’s leftover to create visual texture.  I discovered that my beloved PITT Pens will write on a dry layer of Gilding Polish as will Pebeo’s water based DecoMarkers.  There’s a lot to like about this stuff!

If one did use their fingers to dip into any of these gilding pastes and mould does occur, can it be removed – without tossing out the rest of the product.

Can I use this with a foam applicator to color the raised surface of an embossed piece of paper?

Yes, it works well with embossed paper. Use a light touch and not too much of the product on the applicator

Wow! These are gorgeous. Are they permanent once dry? I can see so many possibilities 🙂

They are pretty darn awesome. They seem to stay put once dry – I just sprayed water on some of my pieces and the background color didn’t move nor did the design I stamped with the Polish on top. I know they need to be top coated for outdoor use.

Love the shine! Could they be used on fabric?

I didn’t try them on fabric, so am not sure how they’ll work. At a guess I think you can apply them but am certain that you can’t launder the piece.

I saw the video and bought a few to try and I have to say they are every bit as gorgeous as Barb says they are. I did discover, however, that they did not stay put when I used gel medium and clear gesso on top of them, even though they were completely dry. I had my amazing background and when I started attaching my focal word with gel medium the shimmer paste dissolved into it, I had smudging and my crisp stencil was crisp no longer. This did not bother me particularly but it is a property I will take into account on future pages.
