As has become our annual tradition, we’re releasing a new set of our Laser Cut Snowflakes for 2017 and they’re debuting today. This is the third year and this group includes five brand new snowflake shapes. Cut from MDF, each measures approximately 4.5″ tall, including the hang-hole.
In the video you’ll see me demo a technique for glittering that is easy and quick, but perhaps more importantly, it keeps the sticky stuff on the face of the snowflake. Which means the glitter will be only on the face of the snowflake. Because who wants glitter gooped up in the openings that make a snowflake so pretty??
Notice I said “sticky stuff” and not glue? That’s because I’ve discovered that Gel Medium not only is a really good stick-um, it also can be applied in a thin layer in a way that keeps it from accumulating in the nooks and crannies. As you’d imagine, snowflakes have a lot of cut out areas, so lots of nooks and crannies. Skip the idea of trying to brush the Gel Medium directly to the surface of the snowflakes. It will only aggravate the heck out of you and the results won’t be as nice. (been there, done that) I like to use a brush that’s at least an inch wide to apply the Gel Medium to my work surface and you’ll see me use one that works really well in today’s video. (link to those brushes below in the supplies section)
Though you can use any fine or ultrafine glitter, nothing says Christmas more than Tim Holtz’s Vintage Platinum Distress Glitter Dust. Neither silver or gold, the glitter contains hints of those colors but is something else altogether. It also flashes with a bit of green when the light strikes it just right.
The entire video doesn’t even run 5 minutes, so you believe me when I say how quick and painless the process is. This is an awesome project for kids too.

The gel press would also be a good way to apply the gel medium to the snowflakes. Fun idea. Love the snowflakes.
