Other: water, scissors, gems or pearls, paper scraps or ephemera, and ribbon or trim, stapler
Directions:
Sometimes I like to art journal in an old book. I like the way the text adds interest to the background, immediately solving the problem of the blank page. If the book pages are fragile or thin, I glue a few together with gel medium before I start. To begin this spread, apply a thin layer of white gesso with a brush to both pages. You aren’t trying to block the text but just to mute it and push it into the background so you can layer over it. A wet brush or a baby wipe can lighten the layer if you add too much. Allow to dry.
Place Joggles Love Twist Stencil across both pages and scrape through some of the openings using a palette knife and Ranger Texture Paste. Leave some of the openings clear of paste.
When the Texture Paste is dry, adhere torn scraps of paper (designer paper, kraft paper, ephemera, graph paper…use what you have) on the far left and right sides of the spread. Super Thick Tacky Glue works well for this.
Continue to build your background by adding more scraps of paper as well as ribbon or trim which can be attached with a stapler.
Once you are satisfied with the layering and composition of the background, apply white gesso over all of the scraps and trim which were just added. Again, you don’t need solid coverage. You are just pushing these layers into the background with the gesso to add depth to your spread. Allow this to dry thoroughly.
Spritz the background lightly with water using the Inkssentials Mini Mister. While the background is still wet, spritz first with the lighter yellow spray ink across the center of the pages and with the orange ink spray across the top and bottom edges as well as the right side of book.
Repeat the water spritzing if necessary and then apply Tattered Angels Kiwi Glimmer Mist or Lindy’s Stamp Gang Two Toned Starburst Spray – Sea Mint Green to the top and left side of the spread.
Allow the inks and water to dry thoroughly, and then deepen the green in some places by using the tube attached to the top of the spray ink lid. A small paint brush dipped into the bottle of spray ink and dabbed onto the background will have the same effect if you prefer. This has to dry completely before moving on to the next step.
Have you played with the Joggles Sticky Snippets sheets yet? They are wonderful self-adhesive label shapes which can be decorated and coloured with all kinds of media choices. Then they can be peeled off to use as little pieces of art, colour, and pattern to add to a background. The negative space around the cut shapes can also be used to layer over backgrounds so nothing goes to waste. One of the new releases is Sticky Snippets – Alphabetica. For this page, I decided to use the letters in their original white form and add detail to them after they were adhered.
Use a black gel or Pitt Artist pen to doodle a line on the letters around the edges. Use the charcoal pencil to outline on the background around each letter. This creates a shadow and helps them stand out. Use your finger or a paper stump to blend the charcoal and soften it.
Use Memento Luxe Espresso Truffle Inkpad to stamp Joggles/ Margaret Applin Designs Skeleton Flowers #1 and #2 Cling Mounted Rubber Stamps onto the bottom of the pages. Vary the heights of the flowers and stamp some that are going off the sides of the pages.
Apply a gem to the center of all of the complete flower images.
Using the same ink, apply Joggles/ Margaret Applin Designs Poeme Floral Border Cling Mounted Rubber Stamp across the top edge of both pages.
Here is another look at the finished art journal spread.
