The 2017 Art Journal Adventure – Week 30
      July 24, 2017

Hi everyone. It’s Bonnie here today with Week 30‘s prompt for the Art Journal Adventure. The theme that I have chosen for this week is Opposites. I had no idea where I was going with this page but I knew that I wanted to divide the page in half and that I wanted a flip up. Beyond that, I had no plan 🙂

Sitting on my desk, I happened to have some music pages torn from an old book. That seemed like as good a place to start as any so I trimmed them both to 7.5 inches long and left them at their 8.75 inch width. Because of the way that I wanted to overlap the pages, I wanted the lines of music to run vertically in similar set up on both pages so I lined them up before trimming. I cut off the right margin on both pages and the jagged parts on the left of the top page. Then I tore the top page in approximately half (no measuring for me!) The half page was spritzed with Heidi Swapp Patina and Ocean Color Shine Sprays. The full page was spritzed with Heidi Swapp Ocean and Teal Color Shine Sprays.

I was itching to play with some of the new Joggles stencils so I decided to feature the Joggles/Margaret Applin Designs Rosette 2 design. The half page was layered over the full page and painter’s tape was used to hold them in place. I inked through the stencil onto both sheets with Tim Holtz Cracked Pistachio, Peacock Feathers, and Salty Ocean Distress Oxide Inks, applying them with a mini ink blending tool.

Here it is with the stencil removed. What a gorgeous design!

I placed the stencil back in place over the full sheet which so far only has half a stencilled design because the top sheet served as a mask. In keeping with my opposites theme, I stencilled the other half with Jet Black Archival, making sure that I just came up to the other stencilling with the black and didn’t overlap.

Here is the full page after the stencilling with black. I didn’t manage to capture the shimmer from the Color Shine sprays but that’s why the stencilling looks less clear and crisp on the right side.

To tie all of the parts together and help the design show up equally well on all three sides, a black Faber Castell Pitt pen was used to outline the outer edges  of each section. I left the insides of the petals alone. I like the effect of the outlining and also how cohesive this looks.

Once the two pages were lined up again, I used my sewing machine to stitch them together along the left side. I punched a .5 circle from a mop up paper and inked the outside edge with Black Big Brush Pen. The circle was then adhered in the center of the design onto the half sheet only. Love how it pops! To add splatters and a little more shimmer, Process Cyan and Waterfall Green Pearlescent Daler Rowney FW Acrylic inks were added to both pages with a fan brush and a small round brush.

More pattern/texture was added with Peacock Feathers Oxide Ink and Joggles/Margaret Applin Designs Vintage Correspondence stamp. Salty Ocean was used to stencil through one of the new Joggles Itty Bitty ATC stencils called Seeds. I added both to the hidden part as well.

I used the same small Pitt pen to outline the left side of some of the “seeds” from the stencil and also to draw a simple border around the page edges. Then, because you know I love my pops of black, I used the XO Itty Bitty ATC Stencil and Jet Black Archival Ink to add a little more pattern and some stronger black details.

I like to add at least a word or two to my pages so, again in keeping with the Opposites prompt, I added the word Positive curved around the lighter side of the rosette and the word negative curved around the darker side with one of the Hero Art alphabet stamp sets… of course, with Jet Black Archival Ink.

Here is the finished page with the flap in place and adhered to my usual black background.

And here is the same page with the flap rolled back to expose the full page underneath. I’m happy with the outcome…no plan? No problem…LOL.

Have fun with the Opposites theme. There are lots of possibilities for this prompt whether you use hues opposite on the colour wheel, opposites in images, word meanings, opposite moods, or styles…whatever you can think of will work. Barb and I can’t wait to see what you create!

This is very cool concept, Bonnie. I like what you did with that stencil.
