2017 Art Journal Adventure &#8211; Week 31"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As often is the case, I went into this week&#8217;s page with one idea and found myself with a finished page that looked almost nothing like what was in my mind&#8217;s eye.<\/p>\n<p>I wanted to draw a mandala and then realized I had neither the time or patience to sit and actually do it.\u00a0 Plan B?\u00a0 Something mandala-like, but that would be easier and take less time to complete.<\/p>\n<p>Your Week 31 prompt is either draw a mandala (how complex is up to you) or something mandala-like.<\/p>\n<p>I decided on concentric circles and then realized that I didn&#8217;t want a perfect group of them, so decided to rough sketch and see what emerged.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/2017-aja-week-31-1.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-A0kcfCni\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6524\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/2017-aja-week-31-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"933\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Squint and you&#8217;ll see the pencil lines.\u00a0 I know they seem kind of faint, but because I waited to try to erase them until I had color in all of the rings, it wasn&#8217;t easy and I wasn&#8217;t successful on some parts.\u00a0 The good news is that the text and doodling either covers them or distracts your eye away.<\/p>\n<p>Since I&#8217;m working on\u00a06&#8243; x 8&#8243; pages and I wanted to have a decent amount of space in the rings, I drew large-ish ones and had them fall off the edge of the page.\u00a0 That not only give me room to work, it also looks better (in my opinion) that one group of concentric-ish rings sitting in the middle of the page.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/2017-aja-week-31-2.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-A0kcfCni\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6522\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/2017-aja-week-31-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"933\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So color&#8230; I chose to use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/art-journals-and-mixed-media\/zig-clean-color-real-brush-markers\" target=\"_blank\">Zig Clean Color Real Brush Markers<\/a>.\u00a0 I like the fact that there&#8217;s an actual brush with actual bristles rather than a piece of felt shaped like a brush.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/2017-aja-week-31-3.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-A0kcfCni\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6523\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/2017-aja-week-31-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"933\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I filled one ring with one color at a time but didn&#8217;t wait for the previous one to completely dry before moving on.\u00a0 As you&#8217;ll see, that causes color to wick from one area to the adjoining ones.\u00a0 You can avoid that by drying them before moving on.\u00a0 My basic technique is to lay color in the area and use a water brush to move it around till I&#8217;m satisfied with the coverage.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/2017-aja-week-31-4.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-A0kcfCni\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6528\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/2017-aja-week-31-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"933\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Some colors of the markers grab into the paper with a little more oooph which makes moving the color into an even layer difficult.\u00a0 Or impossible.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/2017-aja-week-31-5.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-A0kcfCni\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6529\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/2017-aja-week-31-5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"940\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You can see it here\u00a0&#8211; that original laying down of the color on the dry paper.\u00a0 Another option is to wet the area, then apply the color.\u00a0 That helps stop some of that color from grabbing the fibers of the paper and allows blending.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/2017-aja-week-31-7.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-A0kcfCni\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6531\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/2017-aja-week-31-7.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"933\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Rings completely colored.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/2017-aja-week-31-8.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-A0kcfCni\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6532\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/2017-aja-week-31-8.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"933\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So it&#8217;s time for text and doodles.\u00a0 For both I used <a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/art-journals-and-mixed-media\/faber-castell-pitt-pens\" target=\"_blank\">PITT Pens<\/a> in S (Superfine) and F (Fine) tips.\u00a0 I sketched the text using a hard lead pencil which makes it easier to erase.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/2017-aja-week-31-9.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-A0kcfCni\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6533\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/2017-aja-week-31-9.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"933\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I wish I had time to develop Joanne Sharpe-like lettering skills, but since I don&#8217;t I just stuck with my own handwriting.\u00a0 With the text lettered\u00a0I erased the pencils marks and moved on.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/2017-aja-week-31-10.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-A0kcfCni\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6534\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/2017-aja-week-31-10.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"933\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>That moving on meant realizing that the first pass with the pen wasn&#8217;t enough and I wanted to strengthen the letters.\u00a0 And I also wanted to emphasize some words, so I went over them enough to make them stand out.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/2017-aja-week-31-11.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-A0kcfCni\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6536\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/2017-aja-week-31-11.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\"
