{"id":5951,"date":"2017-05-22T07:55:39","date_gmt":"2017-05-22T11:55:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/?p=5951"},"modified":"2017-05-22T07:45:47","modified_gmt":"2017-05-22T11:45:47","slug":"2017-art-journal-adventure-week-21","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/2017-art-journal-adventure-week-21\/","title":{"rendered":"The 2017 Art Journal Adventure &#8211; Week 21"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Because I&#8217;m a creature of habit I tend to reach for the same supplies and use them in much the same way.\u00a0 That happens when I create many things, but seems especially noticeable when working on an art journal page.\u00a0 I decided it was high time to\u00a0go in another direction and for me that meant using a brayer to apply the first layers of paint.<\/p>\n<p>Bear in mind, and you&#8217;ll see this in the process photos, that I don&#8217;t mean a solid layer of paint applied with a brayer.\u00a0 Instead you work with a small bit that the brayer is rolled through, in a couple of different directions, that form patterns on the\u00a0roller\u00a0which are transferred to the page.\u00a0 This results in blocky areas that are very different from the usual background I begin with.\u00a0 As you go along, be careful not to over apply any one color or you&#8217;ll obliterate those random blocks.<\/p>\n<p>Your challenge for Week 21 is to apply the first layers of paint using either a brayer, or if you don&#8217;t have one, scrape it on with an old credit card or a palette knife.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/2017-aka-week-21-1.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-jUVTd9Kd\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5954\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/2017-aka-week-21-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ready to get started. I&#8217;m using a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/paint-dye-and-ink\/brayers\/speedball-4-inch-rubber-brayer-soft.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Speedball Soft Brayer<\/a> and two colors of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/paint-dye-and-ink\/pebeo-studio-acrylic-paint\" target=\"_blank\">Pebeo Studio Acrylic Paint<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/2017-aka-week-21-2.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-jUVTd9Kd\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5955\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/2017-aka-week-21-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>One small dab of paint applied to my work surface, then I rolled the brayer once through it up and down, then once side to side.\u00a0 See how the paint is sitting on the roller in definite patterns?\u00a0 That&#8217;s what you want.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/2017-aka-week-21-3.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-jUVTd9Kd\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5953\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/2017-aka-week-21-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>One short roll of the brayer produced this.\u00a0 By a short roll, I mean from beginning to end, the path the roller traveled was about 6&#8243;.\u00a0 That&#8217;s what allows the pattern to be so defined.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/2017-aka-week-21-4.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-jUVTd9Kd\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5959\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/2017-aka-week-21-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Another roll using the paint that was already on the brayer.\u00a0 You can see the rounded part of the pattern repeat and it has less paint on it this time.\u00a0 The first print of that rounded shape you can see texture in the paint because there was a lot of it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/2017-aka-week-21-5.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-jUVTd9Kd\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5960\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/2017-aka-week-21-5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A third pass with the brayer and that rounded shape is fainter now because a lot of the paint has rolled off of the brayer.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/2017-aka-week-21-6.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-jUVTd9Kd\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5957\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/2017-aka-week-21-6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Because there was paint left on my surface and I didn&#8217;t want to waste it, I grabbed some of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/paint-dye-and-ink\/canvases-and-artist-quality-papers\/artist-quality-papers?sort=def\" target=\"_blank\">Strathmore&#8217;s ATCs<\/a> and pressed it into what remained.\u00a0 Just a straight press and lift to preserve the pattern.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/2017-aka-week-21-7.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-jUVTd9Kd\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5958\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/2017-aka-week-21-7.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"933\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And this is what I ended up with.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/2017-aka-week-21-8.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-jUVTd9Kd\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5964\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/2017-aka-week-21-8.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"933\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Next up, the second color of paint and you can see I followed the same steps for rolling the brayer through the blob of color.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/2017-aka-week-21-9.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-jUVTd9Kd\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5965\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/2017-aka-week-21-9.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"933\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is what I ended up with.\u00a0 I decided I wanted to knock the colors back a little&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/2017-aka-week-21-10.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-jUVTd9Kd\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5966\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/2017-aka-week-21-10.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So I followed the same steps with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/paint-dye-and-ink\/dina-wakley-media\/dina-wakley-media-brushes-mediums-fine-tip-applicators\" target=\"_blank\">Dina Wakley&#8217;s White Gesso<\/a>.\u00a0 Since I wanted to be random about how the gesso was applied, but I wanted a fair amount of coverage, I walked through the steps twice, adding more gesso to recoat the brayer the second time.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/2017-aka-week-21-11.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-jUVTd9Kd\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5967\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/2017-aka-week-21-11.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"933\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the page after those two applications of gesso.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/2017-aka-week-21-12.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-jUVTd9Kd\" data-rl_title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/2017-aka-week-21-13.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-jUVTd9Kd\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5970\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/2017-aka-week-21-13.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Having recently been working with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/art-journals-and-mixed-media\/gel-press-reusable-print-plates\" target=\"_blank\">Gel Press Impressables<\/a>, they were fresh in my mind so I decided to bring them onto the page.\u00a0 This one is Overlapping Circles and is dirty from the last time I used it, but it doesn&#8217;t matter.\u00a0 Eventually I&#8217;ll remove what&#8217;s there using a pick up print.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/2017-aka-week-21-14.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-jUVTd9Kd\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5971\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/2017-aka-week-21-14.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Paint drizzled on and ready to be spread over the surface.\u00a0 Along with the pink Pebeo Studio Acrylic, I added some Blackberry and Turquoise from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/paint-dye-and-ink\/dina-wakley-media\/dina-wakley-media-paint\" target=\"_blank\">Dina&#8217;s Media Paint<\/a> line.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/2017-aka-week-21-15.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-jUVTd9Kd\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5972\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/2017-aka-week-21-15.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"933\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the page after the first impression using the Impressables plate.\u00a0 Technically, this is a ghost print since I printed what was on the plate to begin with on a scrap piece of paper before the first application to my page.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/2017-aka-week-21-16.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-jUVTd9Kd\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5973\" since I wasn&#8217;t necessarily compelled to have the circles over the entire page, but it looked awkward with the small areas left unprinted, so I filled them in.\u00a0 Again, these are ghost prints.\u00a0 I only ever applied paint once to the Impressable.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/2017-aka-week-21-17.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-jUVTd9Kd\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5969\" height=\"933\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I ended up adding random layers of white gesso with the brayer again since I felt as though the circles were too dominant.\u00a0 I can still see the original blocky layers peeking up from the background.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/2017-aka-week-21-19.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-jUVTd9Kd\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5975\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/2017-aka-week-21-19.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"933\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Once the background was more or less finished I tried (and failed) to decide where to go next.\u00a0 Part of the problem is I was rushed and running out of time because I left Sunday morning for a trade show.\u00a0 Ordinarily I would have walked away and left it for a bit and something would have come to me, but that wasn&#8217;t an option this week.\u00a0 I&#8217;m satisfied that I accomplished my goal which was to create a background that
