2017 Art Journal Adventure &#8211; Week 9"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve known what I wanted to do for this week almost since my Week 7 page, which is pretty unusual for the way I work.\u00a0 I&#8217;m rarely settled on any one thing that far ahead, but will take it when it happens!<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d seen several examples of art journal pages where\u00a0an\u00a0edge had been altered and my muse ran with it.\u00a0 So the Week 9 prompt is to transform one edge of your page into something shaped.\u00a0 Which edge and what shape is up to you.\u00a0 Just have fun with it.<\/p>\n<p>Initially I though about working a house into mine, but these flowing, sinuous leaves kept pushing the house, distracting my planning of one side and the roofline extending out to the edge of the page and beyond.\u00a0 When something is pushing that hard to be explored&#8230; you just have to go with it.<\/p>\n<p>So how do you have an\u00a0object extend beyond the edge of a page when there\u00a0isn&#8217;t any material\u00a0<em>beyond<\/em> the edge of the page?\u00a0 The most obvious solution is to add to the page, perhaps by extending it with another strip of the page paper attached with Washi Tape.\u00a0 Or, if\u00a0 you&#8217;re working on loose paper and binding after the fact, you could use a piece that is larger than all the rest.\u00a0 The other choice is to cut back some of the existing page, leaving the object there.\u00a0 So it looks like the page has been extended even though it&#8217;s not any wider (or longer, depending on your orientation) than the others.\u00a0 That&#8217;s what I did.\u00a0 As usual, I began with a pencil sketch&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/2017-aja-week-9-1.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-SfwraMac\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5449\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/2017-aja-week-9-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"803\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I know the lines are faint, but look closely and you&#8217;ll see them.\u00a0 I use a pencil with a hard lead (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/art-journals-and-mixed-media\/drawing-pencils-erasers-templates\/staedtler-mars-lumograph-pencil-5h.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Mars Lumograph 5H<\/a>), sharpened to a fine point, giving me lines just dark enough to see in person, but not too difficult to erase.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/2017-aja-week-9-2.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-SfwraMac\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/2017-aja-week-9-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"781\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>My pages are 9&#8243; x 10&#8243;.\u00a0 With the flowers being this big I needed to use a heavier line than I might ordinarily, so I chose a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/art-journals-and-mixed-media\/faber-castell-pitt-pens\/faber-castell-pitt-artist-pen-f-fine-tip-black.htm\" target=\"_blank\">F (fine) tipped PITT Black Pen<\/a>.\u00a0 Once everything was lined, I erased the pencil marks.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/2017-aja-week-9-3.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-SfwraMac\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5451\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/2017-aja-week-9-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"787\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Then I cut around the right side of the rightmost flower.\u00a0 I couldn&#8217;t figure out\u00a0a more elegant way to transition from the top of the flower petals back to the edge of the page.\u00a0 I&#8217;m not over the moon about that cut, but at some point you have to move on and let it go.\u00a0 So I did.\u00a0 (an old dog can learn new tricks!)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/2017-aja-week-9-4.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-SfwraMac\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5455\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/2017-aja-week-9-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"547\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I like to color with inks (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/paint-dye-and-ink\/tim-holtz-distress-spray-stains\" target=\"_blank\">Distress Spray Stains<\/a> &amp; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/paint-dye-and-ink\/dylusions-ink-sprays-by-dyan-reaveley\" target=\"_blank\">Dylusions Ink Sprays<\/a>.\u00a0 Often diluted with water to make them more pastel) loaded into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/paint-dye-and-ink\/dylusions-ink-sprays-by-dyan-reaveley\" target=\"_blank\">Tim Holtz&#8217;s Detail Waterbrushes<\/a>.\u00a0 This is the group of colors I initially pulled out, thinking they might work.\u00a0 Eventually I culled out all but 4 or 5.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5453\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/2017-aja-week-9-6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"952\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And began coloring.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll post the in progress photos so you can see the progression, then pick up the commentary again after the last one.<\/p>\n<p><a height=\"805\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Once all of the dots were done I decided to add a border.\u00a0 I&#8217;m not convinced this is done\u00a0&#8211; I think there&#8217;s too much stark white background
