I was in Phoenix from\u00a0January 17th to the 25th, at CHA.\u00a0 Phoenix is the desert.\u00a0 Sunny and dry, right?<\/p>\n

Uh, not so much.\u00a0 Not when one is married to a human black cloud.\u00a0 It was overcast and miserable for about 60% of the time and the city had record rainfall one of the days, courtesy of my\u00a0husband, the man who brings rain to the desert.\u00a0 The little sun we did see was glorious after months of winter in New England; a reminder that the sun does shine. (when Dave is not around.\u00a0 I digress)<\/p>\n

While enjoying the sun warming my face it occurred to me that “Here Comes The Sun” would be a good prompt for Week 5, and so here we are.\u00a0 My sun not only warms your face, it\u00a0also includes one.\u00a0 The face-phobic out there need not stress.\u00a0 You can either\u00a0leave yours without\u00a0one or use The Fearless Face Stencil System<\/a> if you want a little help.\u00a0 Or perhaps the lyrics to the Beatles song will inspire your page this week.\u00a0 Interpret the prompt in whatever fashion your muse dictates.<\/p>\n

\"2017-aja-week5-1\"<\/a><\/p>\n

I started by sketching half a face on the left side of the page.\u00a0 And immediately got off on the wrong foot, forgetting to leave room for the Media Tape that will bind this page to the previous one.\u00a0 Doh!\u00a0 I’ll work around it by not coloring the tape which will permit the viewer to see through to what’s underneath.<\/p>\n

\"2017-aja-week5-2\"<\/a><\/p>\n

I knew I wanted text of some sort, so I also penciled in wavy base lines.<\/p>\n

\"2017-aja-week5-3\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Then I lined everything with a black PITT Fine tip pen<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\"2017-aja-week5-4\"<\/a><\/p>\n

I chose to color my sun using Dylusions Ink Sprays<\/a>, Color Wash Sprays, and Distress Spray Stains<\/a> loaded into Tim’s Detail Waterbrushes<\/a>.\u00a0 It’s a convenient and easy way to get watercolor-like effects.\u00a0 For a nice blend, the key is to work wet on wet.\u00a0 I worked on one ray at a time and laid in the lightest color first.<\/p>\n

\"2017-aja-week5-5\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The stroke on some of the darker color, concentrating it where you want that\u00a0one to be predominant.\u00a0 Still working wet on wet…<\/p>\n

\"2017-aja-week5-6\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Then use the brush with the lighter color to blend the two until you’re satisfied.<\/p>\n

\"2017-aja-week5-7\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Rinse, repeat till all of the rays are done.<\/p>\n

\"2017-aja-week5-8\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Then do the face itself.\u00a0 Looks a little freaky with the features left white, right?<\/p>\n

\"2017-aja-week5-9\"<\/a><\/p>\n

But gets much better once they’re colored too.<\/p>\n

\"2017-aja-week5-10\"<\/a><\/p>\n

I decided to doodle in the rays and that the pen lines I used on the entire sun were too thin, so I went over them with a Pebeo decoMarker<\/a> in black, the .7 tip size. I’m liking this now, though am at a loss about what text or quote to use.<\/p>\n

\"2017-aja-week5-11\"<\/a><\/p>\n

I found one by Walt Whitman and penciled it in.<\/p>\n

\"2017-aja-week5-12\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Then I though about filling in some of the wider areas with doodles.\u00a0 And quickly decided I didn’t like it.<\/p>\n

\"2017-aja-week5-13\"<\/a><\/p>\n

So I removed them and then lined the text.\u00a0 You can see that I use the penciled text as a guide rather than writing directly over what was there.\u00a0 When the text was set I erased all of the penciled stuff.<\/p>\n

\"2017-aja-week5-14\"<\/a><\/p>\n

I like this but felt as though the white background was too strong and in your face, so I decided to add color to the text area.<\/p>\n

\"2017-aja-week5-15\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Same process as coloring the sun with the addition of embellishing the text a bit.<\/p>\n

\"2017-aja-week5-16\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Getting there, but… I’m not convinced this is what I saw in my mind’s eye when I imagined the color stripes.<\/p>\n

\"2017-aja-week5-17\"<\/a><\/p>\n

But\u00a0I just had to go with it since at this point there was no turning back.\u00a0 The blotchiness doesn’t help, but I was running out of time, so I didn’t rework the colors to try and smooth them out.<\/p>\n

And finished is better than not!<\/p>\n
