{"id":5237,"date":"2017-01-16T07:55:48","date_gmt":"2017-01-16T12:55:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/?p=5237"},"modified":"2017-01-17T21:49:52","modified_gmt":"2017-01-18T02:49:52","slug":"2017-art-journal-adventure-week-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/2017-art-journal-adventure-week-3\/","title":{"rendered":"The 2017 Art Journal Adventure &#8211; Week 3"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This week&#8217;s prompt is &#8220;mug shot&#8221;, as in create a face that&#8217;s more or less a straight on view and surrounded by some sort of frame.\u00a0 It can be one you draw, something cut from a magazine, a collage sheet image, or even a face you&#8217;ve created using the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/stencils\/joggles-margaret-applin-designs-fearless-face-stencil-system\" target=\"_blank\">Fearless Face Stencil System<\/a>.\u00a0 The frame is fodder for doodles or tangles.\u00a0 Mine is not terribly elaborate, but you can certainly use a lot of the page that surrounds your face if you prefer.\u00a0 I remain undecided if I&#8217;ll add more.\u00a0 What\u00a0I\u00a0really do like is the oval format.\u00a0 It feels right for this page.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d like to say that the idea for this was one I thought a lot about, but honestly, it popped into my head as I was looking at some art journal pages that featured heads or head\u00a0and shoulder views surrounded by a frame.\u00a0 They weren&#8217;t necessarily mug shot like, but who knows the way my mind works?\u00a0 So, mug shot it is!<\/p>\n<p>My first step was to create the area to be surrounded by the frame and I knew I wanted an oval shape.\u00a0 I find it far easier to create a symmetrical shape by cutting it from folded paper.\u00a0 I do this with hearts too&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/2017-aka-week-1-1.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-vQkjCXDe\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5239\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/2017-aka-week-1-1.jpg\" alt=\"2017-aka-week-1-1\" width=\"700\" height=\"933\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Start with a sheet of inexpensive printer paper and fold it in half.\u00a0 If I were making a heart, I would cut it from this half sheet, but&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/2017-aka-week-1-2.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-vQkjCXDe\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5240\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/2017-aka-week-1-2.jpg\" alt=\"2017-aka-week-1-2\" width=\"700\" height=\"780\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I\u00a0want both ends to match, so folded it in half again.\u00a0 I&#8217;m left with one quarter of a page, which I&#8217;ll sketch the shape on.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/2017-aka-week-1-3.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-vQkjCXDe\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5241\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/2017-aka-week-1-3.jpg\" alt=\"2017-aka-week-1-3\" width=\"700\" height=\"885\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Multiple iterations, because it&#8217;s never the way I want the first time.\u00a0\u00a0I tried several shapes and test cut them.\u00a0 One had ends that were too pointy, so I tried again. And a second time.\u00a0 I kept sketching till I was satisfied, or thought the cutting would give me the shape I had in mind.\u00a0 That&#8217;s the reason for the arrow.\u00a0 I kept messing and wanted to be sure that I cut the one I felt was closest to my desired shape.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/2017-aka-week-1-4.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-vQkjCXDe\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5242\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/2017-aka-week-1-4.jpg\" alt=\"2017-aka-week-1-4\" width=\"700\" height=\"562\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the oval and the face I thought I&#8217;d use.\u00a0 The oval was made to fit this one, but of course I ended up deciding to go in a different direction and\u00a0sketching another,\u00a0much less elegant, one\u00a0instead.\u00a0 I had visions of a stately queen-like portrait, but never got to the point where I felt like it was coming together.\u00a0 So mug shot it was!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/2017-aka-week-1-5.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-vQkjCXDe\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5243\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/2017-aka-week-1-5.jpg\" alt=\"2017-aka-week-1-5\" width=\"700\" height=\"789\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>To get the oval centered on the page I need to find the center of it and of the oval itself.\u00a0 Then it&#8217;s just a matter of matching the lines.\u00a0 Lightly put pencil lines in place so you can align them with the ones on your shape.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/2017-aka-week-1-6.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-vQkjCXDe\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5244\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/2017-aka-week-1-6.jpg\" alt=\"2017-aka-week-1-6\" width=\"700\" height=\"984\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Aligning the folds in the paper with the pencil lines means I&#8217;m about as close to centered as I&#8217;m going to get without using geometry and a protractor.\u00a0 And close enough is more then enough here!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/2017-aka-week-1-7.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-vQkjCXDe\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5245\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/2017-aka-week-1-7.jpg\" alt=\"2017-aka-week-1-7\" width=\"700\" height=\"793\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Then it&#8217;s just a matter of using the paper oval as a template and sketching around it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/2017-aka-week-1-8.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-vQkjCXDe\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5247\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/2017-aka-week-1-8.jpg\" alt=\"2017-aka-week-1-8\" width=\"700\" height=\"791\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And lining that sketched oval using a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/art-journals-and-mixed-media\/faber-castell-pitt-pens\" target=\"_blank\">PITT Pen<\/a>.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/art-journals-and-mixed-media\/faber-castell-pitt-pens\/faber-castell-pitt-artist-pen-s-super-fine-tip-black.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Black, S &#8211; Superfine tip<\/a>.\u00a0 Let the doodles begin&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/2017-aka-week-1-9.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-vQkjCXDe\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5248\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/2017-aka-week-1-9.jpg\" alt=\"2017-aka-week-1-9\" width=\"700\" height=\"836\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The paper towel under the page is just to keep the other side from getting soiled.\u00a0 The NonStick Craft Sheet material covering my bench was not scrupulously clean at this moment in time. (imagine that?)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/2017-aka-week-1-10.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-vQkjCXDe\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5249\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/2017-aka-week-1-10.jpg\" alt=\"2017-aka-week-1-10\" width=\"700\" height=\"837\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The nice thing about the lines being wobbly?\u00a0 That all disappears into the doodles.\u00a0 For the way I work&#8230; this is perfect.\u00a0 :+)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/2017-aka-week-1-11.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-vQkjCXDe\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5252\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/2017-aka-week-1-11.jpg\" alt=\"2017-aka-week-1-11\" width=\"700\" height=\"819\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It was right about this time that I decided the original face I&#8217;d planned to use was a bit too regal and refined on this somewhat wonkily doodled oval, so I sketched something more in keeping with it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/2017-aka-week-1-12.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-vQkjCXDe\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5253\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/2017-aka-week-1-12.jpg\" alt=\"2017-aka-week-1-12\" width=\"700\" height=\"949\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>She has a crown, kind of, too.\u00a0 I think she works better with the overall feel of the page, meaning she provides her own &#8220;wonky&#8221; look, in keeping with the doodled oval.\u00a0 She&#8217;s not adhered yet, but will be momentarily.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/2017-aka-week-1-13.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-vQkjCXDe\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5254\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/2017-aka-week-1-13.jpg\" alt=\"2017-aka-week-1-13\" width=\"700\" height=\"841\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now she&#8217;s in place and I added another layer of doodles around the perimeter of the oval.\u00a0 As I said at the beginning, I&#8217;m not convinced that this is finished, but for now I&#8217;ll leave it alone.\u00a0 There&#8217;s merit in walking away, giving yourself time to think about other things, then come back and decide if there&#8217;s more to be done.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This week&#8217;s prompt is &#8220;mug shot&#8221;, as in create a face that&#8217;s more or less a straight on view and surrounded by some sort of frame.\u00a0 It can be one you draw, something cut from a magazine, a collage sheet [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":5254,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_access":"","_jetpack_dont_email_post_to_subs":true,"_jetpack_newsletter_tier_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[3,24],"class_list":{"0":"post-5237","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-uncategorized","8":"tag-art-journaling","9":"tag-doodles-and-tangles"},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.6 -
