Primarily because there are a lot of ways to use a brayer and I wanted to explore other options, bringing us to this week&#8217;s prompt:<\/p>\n<p>Use a brayer with something that will act as a resist.\u00a0 It could be gel medium, though gesso, embossed images, and paint will also act as a resist.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/2016-aja-week-50-1.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-SMzT7KHr\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4981\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/2016-aja-week-50-1.jpg\" alt=\"2016-aja-week-50-1\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ready to go.\u00a0 Simple tools this week.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/paint-dye-and-ink\/dina-wakley-media\/dina-wakley-media-brushes-mediums-fine-tip-applicators\/dina-wakley-media-gel-medium-4oz-jar.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Dina&#8217;s Gel Medium<\/a> and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/tools-and-supplies\/miscellaneous-supplies\/speedball-4-inch-rubber-brayer-soft.htm\" target=\"_blank\">brayer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/2016-aja-week-50-2.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-SMzT7KHr\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4982\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/2016-aja-week-50-2.jpg\" alt=\"2016-aja-week-50-2\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I knew I wanted a completely random pattern of blob shapes, so I put dabs of gel medium on my table, then grabbed the brayer&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/2016-aja-week-50-3.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-SMzT7KHr\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4980\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/2016-aja-week-50-3.jpg\" alt=\"2016-aja-week-50-3\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And rolled it once through the gel medium.\u00a0 That provides distinct blobs on the brayer.\u00a0 If I had rolled back and forth it would have spread the medium out into a layer and that would have caused a roll of the brayer on the page to be a solid stripe.\u00a0 With that single pass through the gel medium done, I rolled the loaded brayer on the page. Twice, knowing full well that the second pass would provide less transfer of the gel medium.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/2016-aja-week-50-4.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-SMzT7KHr\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4983\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/2016-aja-week-50-4.jpg\" alt=\"2016-aja-week-50-4\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After the second roll of the brayer on the page it was time to load more gel medium on it.\u00a0 Same process as before, a couple of rolls through the gel medium and nothing more.\u00a0 See how the blobs of gel medium on the bench surface still have not rolled out into a smooth later?\u00a0 That&#8217;s what I&#8217;m looking for to keep those distinct shapes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/2016-aja-week-50-5.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-SMzT7KHr\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4984\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/2016-aja-week-50-5.jpg\" alt=\"2016-aja-week-50-5\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There was no point in photographing the page with the dried blobs of gel medium since it was nearly impossible to see them.\u00a0 This is how it looked after I sprayed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/paint-dye-and-ink\/tim-holtz-distress-spray-stains\/tim-holtz-distress-spray-stains-twisted-citron.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Twisted Citron<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/paint-dye-and-ink\/tim-holtz-distress-spray-stains\/tim-holtz-distress-spray-stains-tumbled-glass.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Tumbled Glass<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/paint-dye-and-ink\/tim-holtz-distress-spray-stains\" target=\"_blank\">Distress Spray Stain<\/a> on page, once the gel medium was completely dry.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/2016-aja-week-50-6.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-SMzT7KHr\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4985\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/2016-aja-week-50-6.jpg\" alt=\"2016-aja-week-50-6\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>With the spray dry, it&#8217;s easy to see the pattern of the gel medium, doing its job and acting as a resist.\u00a0 While this is interesting, it needs more.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/2016-aja-week-50-7.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-SMzT7KHr\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4987\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/2016-aja-week-50-7.jpg\" alt=\"2016-aja-week-50-7\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So I pulled out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/paint-dye-and-ink\/dylusions-paint-by-dyan-reaveley\" target=\"_blank\">Dylusions Paint<\/a> in two colors: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/paint-dye-and-ink\/dylusions-paint-by-dyan-reaveley\/dylusions-paint-dirty-martini.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Dirty Martini<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/paint-dye-and-ink\/dylusions-paint-by-dyan-reaveley\/dylusions-paint-vibrant-turquoise.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Vibrant Turquoise<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0 And then I got engrossed in the process and completed several steps without taking interim photos.\u00a0 Ooops.\u00a0 Sorry about that!<a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/2016-aja-week-50-8.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-SMzT7KHr\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4986\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/2016-aja-week-50-8.jpg\" alt=\"2016-aja-week-50-8\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You can see the Vibrant Turquoise paint as loose applications of color.\u00a0 I used Dirty Martini with our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/stencils\/joggles-9-inch-x-12-inch-stencils-and-masks\/joggles-stencils-wander-10-33791.htm\" target=\"_blank\">9&#8243; x 12&#8243; Wander Stencil<\/a>.\u00a0 The Vibrant Turquoise was added with my fingers, just smooshing the color around.\u00a0 I used one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/art-journals-and-mixed-media\/misc-stamp-mixed-media-supplies\/ranger-inkssentials-mini-ink-blending-tool-40965.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Mini Ink Blending Tools<\/a> to apply Dirty Martini through the stencil.\u00a0 I also used <a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/paint-dye-and-ink\/dylusions-paint-by-dyan-reaveley\/dylusions-paint-black-marble.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Dylusions Black Marble Paint<\/a> on the Mini Ink Blending Tool and made the area of small black dots using our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/stencils\/joggles-9-inch-x-12-inch-stencils-and-masks\/joggles-stencils-punchinella-trio-1-10-33771.htm\" target=\"_blank\">9&#8243; x 12&#8243; Punchinella Trio #1 Stencil<\/a>.\u00a0 The large black dots were made with the Mini Ink Blending tool by applying it to the page surface and twisting in a circle.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/2016-aja-week-50-9.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-SMzT7KHr\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4988\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/2016-aja-week-50-9.jpg\" alt=\"2016-aja-week-50-9\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Thinking the page lacked cohesiveness, I used one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/paint-dye-and-ink\/lindys-stamp-gang-two-toned-starburst-sprays\" target=\"_blank\">Lindy&#8217;s Starburst Spray<\/a> and added a layer over the entire page.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/2016-aja-week-50-10.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-SMzT7KHr\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4990\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/2016-aja-week-50-10.jpg\" alt=\"2016-aja-week-50-10\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>That pulled everything together in a way I liked, but it was a little flat and lacking depth so I recoated the big black dots.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/2016-aja-week-50-11.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-SMzT7KHr\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4991\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/2016-aja-week-50-11.jpg\" alt=\"2016-aja-week-50-11\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Got out a white pen and drew around both size dots.\u00a0 I like this, but&#8230; it still seems to be missing something.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/2016-aja-week-50-12.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-SMzT7KHr\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4989\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/2016-aja-week-50-12.jpg\" alt=\"2016-aja-week-50-12\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I grabbed two of the rolls of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/paint-dye-and-ink\/dina-wakley-media\/dina-wakley-media-accessories-and-media-board\/dina-wakley-media-tape-3-pack-printed.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Dina Wakley&#8217;s Printed Media Tape<\/a>\u00a0and added strips in both directions.\u00a0 Now I like it well enough to call it done.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last week&#8217;s prompt was to use a brayer to create the page background.\u00a0 I&#8217;m back using the brayer again this week, but this time in combination with Dina Wakley&#8217;s Gel Medium.
