Today’s prompt is: insects.\u00a0 Whether you choose an actual insect, which is defined as\u00a0something that has six jointed legs, 3 body parts, a pair of antennae, compound eyes, and an exoskeleton, or something insect-like, it’s all good.\u00a0 As always, it’s a guide and not a must have.<\/span><\/p>\n

I chose butterflies… because I like them.\u00a0 And happily, they fall into the insect category.\u00a0 I’m two for two today!<\/p>\n

\"2016-aja-week-401-1\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Rather than draw a butterfly I took the simple road and cut out three from our Watercolor Butterflies IV collage sheet<\/a>\u00a0– the three leftmost ones that you see on the sheet on top.\u00a0 Once I decided on those three, I more or less knew what the colors for the rest of the page would be.\u00a0 I had the idea to use Gelatos<\/a>\u00a0for the background, over a gessoed surface, so the first thing I needed to do…<\/p>\n

Was add a very rough layer on the page.<\/p>\n

\"2016-aja-week-401-2\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Then I chose colors that worked with the butterflies.\u00a0 Note one Distress Crayon <\/a>since I didn’t have a Gelato on dark blue.<\/p>\n

\"2016-aja-week-401-3\"<\/a><\/p>\n

I scribbled them on and spritzed water on top… too much water and made a mess when I moved the colors with my fingers.<\/p>\n

\"2016-aja-week-401-4\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Then wiped most of it off.<\/p>\n

\"2016-aja-week-401-5\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Then spritzed a Starburst Spray<\/a> on top.\u00a0 When it as dry I applied\u00a0Chopped Pesto Dylusions Paint<\/a> through our Pebbly Mask<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\"2016-aja-week-401-6\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Then added the dots using Black Marble Dylusions Paint<\/a> through our Punchinella Trio I Stencil<\/a>\u00a0using one of the Inkssentials Mini Ink Blending Tools<\/a>.\u00a0 Decided that was boring and the colors were too close to the ones in the butterflies for there to be enough contrast so…<\/p>\n

\"2016-aja-week-401-7\"<\/a><\/p>\n

I used the same Mini Ink Blending Tool with gesso to make big white dots.\u00a0 It took a few coats to get good coverage, but I find gesso is better than paint for this type of thing.\u00a0 It covers better (yeah, I know three coats – it would have taken more with paint) and for some reason tends not to pick up the colors underneath, staying more white than paint does.\u00a0 That was better, but it wasn’t quite what I was trying for.<\/p>\n

So I used the Chipped Sapphire Distress Crayon and drew around the white dots, then smudged it with my finger.\u00a0 Much better now and you can see with the butterflies on the page there’s more contrast.<\/p>\n

\"2016-aja-week-401-9\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Two\u00a0last embellishments… small black dots around the big white dots.\u00a0 I used a water based Sharpie Paint Pen, an extra fine black<\/a> one.\u00a0 Then I used an extra fine White Paint Pen<\/a> and drew around some of the\u00a0black dots I made with the Punchinella I stencil.\u00a0 Much, much better.<\/p>\n

Glued the butterflies in place, but felt as though they were blending into the background too much.<\/p>\n

\"2016-aja-week-401-11\"<\/a><\/p>\n

So I used the extra fine black\u00a0Sharpie and drew around each.\u00a0 In hindsight, I wish I’d not lined around the yellow butterfly since I think it’s a little too stark.\u00a0 Other than that I’m satisfied and there’s Week 40 in the books!<\/p>\n
