Welcome to Week 28 of the 2016 Art Journal Adventure.\u00a0 It amazes me still that we’re a\u00a0 full 6 months into this project.<\/p>\n

I’m a big fan of Pablo Picasso and his Cubist paintings fascinate me.\u00a0 In the Cubist style, the paintings are not meant to be realistic, but rather reflect a view from different vantage points that have been assembled into one painting.<\/p>\n

In the same way that I like to work in my perfectly imperfect style, the idea that Cubist work is not meant to be realistic is right in my wheelhouse.\u00a0 Eyes not symmetrical?\u00a0 Nose seem like it could be from a being not of this earth?\u00a0 Chunky slashes of color?\u00a0 Yes, yes, yes.<\/p>\n

I admire the folks who paint realistic figures.\u00a0 The qualities they’re able to capture; the detail, symmetry and careful placement of facial features is amazing.\u00a0 But it’s not me or my style.\u00a0 Not by a long shot.\u00a0 I can do flat, no specific\u00a0perspective, very unrealistic work.<\/p>\n

With that in mind, I thought it would be fun to try and copy one of Picasso’s Cubist paintings.<\/p>\n

\"2016-aja-week-28-inspiration\"<\/a><\/p>\n

I chose this one as my inspiration.\u00a0 Don’t ask what the name is.\u00a0 I don’t know, though I do see it credited as one of his and that’s his signature in the lower right.\u00a0 I love this painting.<\/p>\n

There are various sketches on the internet that show a face that melds a frontal and side view in the Cubist style\u00a0and that was where I began.<\/p>\n

\"2016-aja-week-28-1\"<\/a><\/p>\n

This is my sketched interpretation of that dual perspective.\u00a0 I had no plans for it other than to try to create one.\u00a0 Which is good since I drew it too large, plus everything is off and pretty unattractive.\u00a0 There’s “not meant to be realistic” and plain ugly.\u00a0 This is the latter, not the former!<\/p>\n

\"2016-aja-week-28-2\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Peer closely and you’ll see the basic shape of the face and neck from the inspiration painting.\u00a0 This one is smaller and far less unattractive than the dual perspective one.<\/p>\n

\"2016-aja-week-28-3\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The sketch finished.\u00a0 These sketches were done early in the week, then more than the usual craziness set in as I was prepping to head to a trade show.\u00a0 I packed paint and brushes so I could finish in the hotel room.\u00a0 Of course I didn’t pack the correct sized brush…<\/p>\n

So was forced to make do with this\u00a0one.\u00a0 I’m up for the challenge though.\u00a0 What the hell, it may just be ok!<\/p>\n

\"2016-aja-week-28-5\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Not only am I using a brush that’s too large for the task, I’m also using one of our Acrylic Blocks as a palette.\u00a0 You make do with what you have when you’re on the road!\u00a0 I’m using Black Marble Dylusions Paint<\/a>.\u00a0 Using the inspiration painting as a guide, I laid in the black.\u00a0 So far, so good, though I did line something that isn’t in the original.\u00a0 (Sh)It happens.<\/p>\n

\"2016-aja-week-28-6\"<\/a><\/p>\n

More Dylusions Paint: Postbox Red <\/a>and Lemon Zest<\/a>.\u00a0 I’m still using that oversized round brush.\u00a0 And wishing I had a smaller one.\u00a0 I’m filling in colors approximately the way they are in the inspiration painting, though I am taking some artistic license.\u00a0 There are white gaps where the background is peeking through the color.\u00a0 I’m going to fill them in.\u00a0 Eventually.\u00a0 I’m also planning on the idea that I’ll need to add black back in again.\u00a0 I’m sure there will be places where the color pushes past where it ought to be.<\/p>\n

\"2016-aja-week-28-7\"<\/a><\/p>\n

You can see places where I’ve covered the black.\u00a0 Yup, those are where I’ll need to go back and add it back in.\u00a0 In the inspiration photo the blue Picasso used looks like a sky blue color.\u00a0 Since I am a dolt, I did not pack London Blue<\/a>, which I could have lightened with White Linen<\/a>.\u00a0 So Vibrant Turquoise<\/a> will have to do.<\/p>\n

At this point my version only faintly resembles the original.\u00a0 Ooops.<\/p>\n

\"2016-aja-week-28-8\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Dirty Martini <\/a>is laid in the green places.\u00a0 I’ve started to add back the black too.<\/p>\n

\"2016-aja-week-28-9\"<\/a><\/p>\n

More Lemon Zest too.\u00a0 I went back over the streak on her face, added more to her neck, and put some on her headpiece.\u00a0 Picasso’s does not have black in the headpiece.\u00a0 Mine does.\u00a0 Artistic license.<\/p>\n

This was so far outside my norm it’s not funny, but it WAS fun.\u00a0 I would have enjoyed it more if I’d been at home and able to work with a smaller brush.\u00a0 Which is not to say I didn’t enjoy the process.\u00a0 I did and I hope you\u00a0do too!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
