{"id":2178,"date":"2016-04-25T07:55:11","date_gmt":"2016-04-25T11:55:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/?p=2178"},"modified":"2016-04-25T19:22:38","modified_gmt":"2016-04-25T23:22:38","slug":"2016-art-journal-adventure-week-17","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/2016-art-journal-adventure-week-17\/","title":{"rendered":"The 2016 Art Journal Adventure &#8211; Week 17"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Color and color theory fascinate me.\u00a0 I really enjoy mixing colors and combining them\u00a0on a page to create a mood or overall feeling.<\/p>\n<p>When I say mixing, I mean the blending of two or more hues to create a new one.\u00a0 Yellow + blue = green.<\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;combining&#8221; reference has everything to do with using colors together, without necessarily allowing them to mix to create a new one.\u00a0 In the case of today&#8217;s page, that means working with colors that when used together, create a lively, vibrant feeling; a\u00a0complementary scheme.\u00a0 There are other color schemes that are lively and vibrant, but that&#8217;s a discussion for another blog post!<\/p>\n<p>If\u00a0we&#8217;re going to\u00a0discuss\u00a0color theory, a color wheel is\u00a0essential. Wikipedia displays this one:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/2016-aja-week-17-0.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2180\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-vSvqolxu\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2180\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/2016-aja-week-17-0.jpg\" alt=\"2016-aja-week-17-0\" width=\"700\" height=\"700\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And says &#8220;This is a\u00a0traditional color star developed in 1867 by Charles Blanc. The traditional complementary colors used by 19th-century artists such as Van Gogh, Monet and Renoir are directly opposite each other.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>If you find my orange background color on this wheel, and interpret the &#8220;directly opposite each other&#8221; more loosely (as I did) as &#8220;generally opposite each other&#8221;, you&#8217;ll see that the complementary colors for orange are green, blue, and purple.<\/p>\n<p>Creating this page began with an application of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/paint-dye-and-ink\/dina-wakley-media\/dina-wakley-media-brushes-mediums-fine-tip-applicators\/dina-wakley-media-white-gesso-4oz-jar.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Dina Wakley&#8217;s Gesso<\/a>, applied very thinly (scraped on really) as you&#8217;ve seen in previous weeks.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/2016-aja-week-17-1.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2181\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-vSvqolxu\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2181\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/2016-aja-week-17-1.jpg\" alt=\"2016-aja-week-17-1\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I wanted softer, more pastel colors, so once the gesso was dry I got out the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/paint-dye-and-ink\/dylusions-paint-by-dyan-reaveley\" target=\"_blank\">Dylusions Paint<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/paint-dye-and-ink\/dylusions-paint-by-dyan-reaveley\/dylusions-paint-white-linen.htm\" target=\"_blank\">White Linen<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/paint-dye-and-ink\/dylusions-paint-by-dyan-reaveley\/dylusions-paint-tangerine-dream.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Tangerine Dream<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/paint-dye-and-ink\/dylusions-paint-by-dyan-reaveley\/dylusions-paint-lemon-zest.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Lemon Zest<\/a>) and began by applying a light layer of White Linen over most of the page.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/2016-aja-week-17-2.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2182\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-vSvqolxu\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2182\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/2016-aja-week-17-2.jpg\" alt=\"2016-aja-week-17-2\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I wanted to blend the Tangerine Dream and Lemon Zest right into the wet White Linen, allowing the mixing to happen right on the page, which offer a more loose and less blended look.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s the beginning of the Tangerine Dream.\u00a0 You can see I&#8217;m not using a lot of paint in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/rubber-stamps-and-paper-art-supplies\/misc-stamp-mixed-media-supplies\/ranger-inkssentials-mini-ink-blending-tool-40965.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Mini Ink Blending Tool<\/a> and that the White Linen is still damp.\u00a0 So far, so good.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/2016-aja-week-17-3.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2183\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-vSvqolxu\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2183\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/2016-aja-week-17-3.jpg\" alt=\"2016-aja-week-17-3\" width=\"700\" height=\"492\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Progress.\u00a0 With most of the page covered with paint, the background was done and allowed to dry.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/2016-aja-week-17-4.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2184\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-vSvqolxu\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2184\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/2016-aja-week-17-4.jpg\" alt=\"2016-aja-week-17-4\" width=\"700\" height=\"485\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m sure it comes as no surprise that I felt the need to include circles!\u00a0 I made these with the Mini Ink Blending Tool.\u00a0 Just apply it to the page and twist to form the circle.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/2016-aja-week-17-5.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2185\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-vSvqolxu\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2185\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/2016-aja-week-17-5.jpg\" alt=\"2016-aja-week-17-5\" width=\"700\" height=\"453\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here comes the first of the complementary colors: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/paint-dye-and-ink\/dylusions-paint-by-dyan-reaveley\/dylusions-paint-crushed-grape.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Crushed Grape Dylusions Paint<\/a> was thinned with water and spattered with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/tools-and-supplies\/brushes-brushes-brushes\/princeton-watercolor-brush-4-fan-4350.htm\" target=\"_blank\">#4 Fan Brush<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/2016-aja-week-17-6.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2186\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-vSvqolxu\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2186\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/2016-aja-week-17-6.jpg\" alt=\"2016-aja-week-17-6\" width=\"700\" height=\"435\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After the purple spatters were dry I added circles with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/tools-and-supplies\/faber-castell-pitt-pens\/faber-castell-pitt-artist-pen-s-super-fine-tip-black-199.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Superfine Black PITT Pen<\/a> and filled them in with white.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve begun to think about placement of the characters and props and you can see that the complementary colors are in full bloom.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve used green, turquoise, and purple to color the images.\u00a0 One of the hallmarks of a complementary color scheme is the high contrast of the colors.\u00a0 They really do pop.<\/p>\n<p>The stamps are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/rubber-stamps-and-paper-art-supplies\/rubber-stamps\/stampotique-originals\/stampotique-originals-6176-piling-thing.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Stampotique Piling Thing<\/a> (CORRETION: That stamp is actually Towering Gifts &#8211; apologies for any confusion.\u00a0 You can see Tower Of Gifts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/rubber-stamps-and-paper-art-supplies\/rubber-stamps\/stampotique-originals\/stampotique-originals-6185-towering-gifts.htm\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/rubber-stamps-and-paper-art-supplies\/rubber-stamps\/joggles-bloobel-cling-mounted-rubber-stamps\/joggles-bloobel-cling-mounted-rubber-stamp-quirky-birdy-1-56787.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Bloobel Quirky Birds #1<\/a>.\u00a0 I&#8217;m also testing the possibility of using glitter circles on the background.\u00a0 As you&#8217;ll see I swapped them out for stars&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/2016-aja-week-17-7.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2187\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-vSvqolxu\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2187\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/2016-aja-week-17-7.jpg\" alt=\"2016-aja-week-17-7\" width=\"700\" height=\"483\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Though I ended up not using the 5 of them you see here.\u00a0 The bunny is another Stampotique image named <a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/rubber-stamps-and-paper-art-supplies\/rubber-stamps\/stampotique-originals\/stampotique-originals-11015-frock.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Frock<\/a>\u00a0and I&#8217;m using a\u00a0second of the Piling Things, though for this one I cut the big present on the bottom off.\u00a0 I glued a strip of my Deli Papers (that were mounted on watercolor paper) along the bottom of the page so that figure and boxes were grounded.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/2016-aja-week-17-8-1-1.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2193\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-vSvqolxu\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2193\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joggles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/2016-aja-week-17-8-1-1.jpg\" alt=\"2016-aja-week-17-8-1\" width=\"700\" height=\"643\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The
