Today I’m working with PanPastels and Sofft Tools. We’ve stocked both in the past and I felt it was time to bring them back since they’re a wonderful product for art journals and mixed media.
In the video you’ll see me demo some very basic techniques to get you started, plus other options for working with these products. If you’ve used pastels or chalks before, throw out what you knew since PanPastels are very different. Wonderfully, beautifully different!
As for working on the surface, SpectraFix is my choice for sealing. It’s safe for indoor use, which is a bonus in my opinion, plus you can work over it to add additional layers and pen work. I tried both PITT Pens and the Water Based Sharpie Markers and each works perfectly over a sealed surface.
Keep in mind that Sofft Tools have uses beyond applying PanPastels. You may as well get some mileage out of your supplies.

Another great tutorial Barb! I did notice on “the frugal crafter” blog how Lindsay reconstituted a broken pan pastel. The title of the video is “Another epic crash!” She used 70% alcohol, filled the pan, squished it with her fingers to blend & re-form, then let dry overnight with seemingly good results!
I was thinking of the same video by Lindsay…here is the link:

Barb, I use the spectra fix concentrate, mix with pure grain alcohol, and put in a Preval sprayer. Tip from pastel expert Alan Flattmann. Love the verse mark demo!
you can reconstitute the pan pastels. Drop ruling alcohol on to it and smoosh it around with your finger into a paste and then smooth the top. If you want it smoother, put some cheesecloth on top and push it down with a small jar.
rubbing, not ruling
Just wanted to thank you for inspiring me to get my panpastels out of the drawer they have been sitting in for a good long while. I tried your technique with a fixative I bought here in Norway and it also worked just fine. I love being able to use my pastels in a new way:) Hope you’ll have a great weekend!
I have some pan pastels and never really understood until now another way to use them. Thanks Barb
