More often than not when I get home from the warehouse on a Friday afternoon all I want to do is have dinner and relax. Long weeks make for quiet Friday nights, but yesterday was an exception to my typical evening plans.
I spent a good part of the day on Tuesday creating thirteen new Collage Sheets and Simon picked them up from the printer on Friday morning. I’d had a few days of the images dancing around in my head and knew I wanted to do something with them.
One of the by products of filming lots of videos is lots of left over stuff, in various stages of completion. I pulled out some 4″ x 4″ Strathmore Artist Tiles I’d worked on while filming Finnabair’s Impasto Paint video. They had colors fingerpainted on the background so were more or less ready for what I wanted to do, then began cutting images out. I chose two Halloween ones and another from the GirlIttude 6 sheet. That one will probably find its way to a card or journal page.
See the new Collage Sheets by clicking HERE – they’re in sale at the moment for 30% off, so an awesome deal! I used A Troop Of Monsters, Graphic Pumpkins, and GirlIttude 6.
I used Strathmore Artist Tiles, Marabu Artist Crayons (though the stencils, over the existing backgrounds), our Punchinella Trio #1 and Ancient Ruins Stencils and added a little line work with a PITT Pen. The sentiment on the first card was cut from our Fall and Halloween Quotes Collage Sheet. Take a look at the second one, with the monsters from the A Troop of Monsters Collage Sheet, and you’ll see I used a couple of the stickers from the new Creative Dyary Back Chat Stickers. I like them in this application.
Because the backgrounds were done, all that remained was adding a layer or two using the stencils and Art Crayons, then the images I’d cut out. Here’s what I ended up with:
Creative Dyary Back Chat Stickers in action, outside of a Dyary or planner!
Lest you think I’m somehow neater than you (we all have images in our mind’s eye of fabulous studios with everything in its place), take a peek behind the curtain and you see my bench and just how messy it is. When I begin it’s usually in a space on the table that’s about 30″ x 30″. Once I’ve spread stuff all over the place it ends up that I have about 12″ of clear space to actually work in. Mind you, the table is 8 feet long, so there’s a lot of other stuff accumulated there too.

Barb, your design ideas always amaze me! Can this skill be learned? Seroiusly, can it?
Hugs, Lynda in Canada ( the one who is computer challenged when doing orders😁) ….grin
Thanks Lynda! Yes, I believe they can be learned. It’s a matter of making art, all of the time. The more you create the better you get at it. Don’t forget that you only see what I post in one place or another. There are plenty of pieces that end up tossed or that never see the light of day. That too is part of the process of growing as an artist, as you figure out what doesn’t work.
I feel so much better having seen your workspace! I have about 6 feet of a glass-topped desk that I work on. Well, that’s not exactly true. The desktop is about 6 feet, but by the time I lay out/collect supples, I work in a space that’s about 10″ x 10″. People ask me why I don’t clean up the mess. I tell them it’s not mess, it’s inspiration!
Love your collage sheets. I may have to shop!!
LOL, glad I could help! If you could see the rest of the space you’d feel even more at home. There’s stuff piled on most of the horizontal surfaces – stuff I expect to need in the not-too-distant-future, so it doesn’t get put away. As much as I dislike clutter in the rest of the house, it’s a fact life in my studio.
Aw! C’mon Barb. I always admired your clean work space and how you always have everything you need right at your fingertips. Now I find you are just like us. Love it. We are all art friends from a cluttered space. :).
I often have what I need right at my fingertips because stuff often doesn’t get put away!
I was so charmed by your collage figures .Alice in Wonderland? OMG! Collect her! Have to admit working on a regular planner has had me weirded out, but finally the dam broke and I found more creative ways to use all those fun stickers, etc. I followed the craze so will see it through but not as fun as my Art Journal or Dylusions Dyary where my newfound inspirations from Joggles can play out. Just love your website & blogs/demos/you tube videos. (can you tell by all the money I am spending.) It seems so much more personal. Thanks for that! Val (Canada)
Thanks Val! We all appreciate your business. It’s awesome to know you find the videos inspirational!
