I got to don my “Mad Scientist” robes for today’s video. Playing, testing, experimenting and exploring those “what if” scenarios is always an exercise in fun. Some of the time the results are not what I’d hoped for or expected. Others I see things I never anticipated. Then there are times when magic happens and that’s what I want to share today.
If oil and water don’t mix, we know that water based paints are not gonna mix with a solvent based one, right? Well, they don’t mix per se, but they do react… and the results are nothing short of amazing.
Like you, I’ve seen videos where folks drop alcohol ink on wet acrylic paint and watch the bursts and blooming of the ink. So I wondered what would happen if I used metallic paint and how could I get around paper buckling which interferes with the way the ink behaves. The answer to those two ponderings is part of what you’ll see today: metallic paint makes magic and if you use Yupo as the substrate, the buckling is completely negated.
The other discovery, made completely by accident, is what happens to the Alcohol Inks if you spritz water on top of them. It wasn’t until after I finished filming that segment of the video that I realized what happened and what a big deal it is. I suspect it’s something I’ll explore further, as and when I can squeeze it in.
In the meantime, jump into the deep end of the pool with me and explore working with Alcohol Inks on wet acrylic paint!

Can’t wait to use this on polymer clay! Thanks for the super (as always!) video!
Thank you for the inspiration and it totally motivated me to do can I share what I did here
This is great Donna, thanks for posting the photo!
Love your experiments and your doodles are so much fun! Can’t wait to try this.
Thanks for the video, Barb.
This is brilliant, Barb! Thank you. A “what if” scenario that crossed my mind – this same process on a gell press plate…or would it turn to mud…
Hmmmn. Not sure about that, but I may just give it a try!
I wonder how glossy photo paper would work instead of Yupo (which I happen to have)
I enjoy watching your videos. I like that you like to play with different products. thanks for sharing

I made a card with Yupo, gold acrylic paint, and alcohol inks. This technique expands the horizons of my alcohol ink play! Thank you for experimenting and coming up with this new method. So many ideas! So little time!
Can’t wait to try on canvas. I want to try on soda cans too . will need to figure out what to use as a basebon them?
Do you think that the process you used on the yupo paper with the acrylic paint, then dropping alcohol ink on it could be used on the 4 x 4 ceramic tiles for COASTERS if you put a final sealer spray on top
Thanks for the demo it was awsome
I think it probably would, though without trying it’s impossible to know for sure. Both are nonporous surfaces and the ink behaves similarly on them. I’m glad you enjoyed the video!
