Masking Fluid is a supply that I don’t think about or use enough. Because it’s meant to be removed once its work is done, it leaves the substrate intact and unaltered, unlike something like gel medium that remains part of the project.
Masking Fluid is also capable of much more than preserving white space and you’ll see me demo just how to make that happen. Interestingly enough, it’s also suitable for use on a synthetic paper like Yupo and works well with Alcohol Inks on Yupo – which you’ll also see me demo.
Though it goes by many names (frisket, masking fluid, drawing gum, liquid masque), there’s not doubt that when it comes to preserving whit space or color, masking fluid is perfect for the job!
Be sure to scroll under the video and supply list to see one of my 2″ tall Itty Bitty Accordion Books that I used Masking Fluid on and then bound once all of the artwork was finished. The white scalloped border at the top was made with Masking Fluid. It was the first step in the creation of the book. Once it was dry I sprayed the inks to color the background, dried them, and then removed the Masking Fluid.

Thank you, Barb, great info and demo……..I can definitely see the possibilities!
This will be great for my mushrooms!!! Thanks for the great video.
Can it be used on copper for itching with acid?
Can it be used on mosaic tile’s with alcohol ink ?
I don’t believe Masking Fluid will work on metal for acid etching. I have used glue on glazed tiles as a mask for use with Alcohol Ink, but not Masking Fluid. I suspect it will work, but you would need to test to be absolutely certain.
Thanks for getting back to me.

Great demo, Barb, as usual. I had forgotten about masking fluid, it was in my long forgotten watercolor bin…so long, is had become cement 😞But, it’s on my list for my next trip to town…or my next Joggles order, whichever comes first. 😁
I have been watching U Tube with people taking acrylic paint adding water, alcohol and/or silicone liquid. They then just pour the paint onto the canvas. Have you seen this? Have you done this? And what/where, or why add silicone. What kind of liquid silicone are they using. And my last question – what are they using to seal their work or does it not need sealing.
I enjoy you blog and all the items you show. I have fun trying them and I do buy occasionally.
Thank you Barbara, in advance.
Dianne
I have seen a couple of videos demoing the process, but know nothing at all about the process, I’m sorry.
I can watch your videos till the cows come home!!!
