As a non-card maker, or someone who rarely does, I’m continually amazed at the multi-level, multi-tiered cards Virginia creates. Her ways of folding, bending, and forming cardstock into those awesome cards is a skill I admire. What I also admire is how well she explains the process, making the complex into something that anyone can have success with.
Today’s card features a couple of Stampotique Originals stamps and several of ours. Everything is listed and linked in the supply section that follows, making it easy for you to click and get right to the products. I’ll be hoping to see photos of your cards, but if you decide to transform this project into something else, I’m sure it will be fabulous too.
“Dwindled and Her Pet”… Easel Step Card
Supplies Used:
2 sheets of 12 x 12 cardstock – I used a yellow orange
Strathmore Mixed Media Paper – I used an 11 x 14 sheet – watercolor paper may be substituted
Dylusions Ink Sprays: Bubblegum Pink, Tangerine Dream, Lemon Zest
Joggles Wander Stencil
Dylusions Holes Stencil – 5 x 8 size
Dylusions Heart Border Stencil – 5 x 8 size
Tim Holtz Typo Stencil
Joggles Stamps: Tutti Frutti Sunflower, Twined Couple, Tutti Frutti Tendril, Create Definition
Stampotique Stamps: Dwindled and Kitty
Gelly Roll Pens: White, Stardust Clear, Stardust Gold, Gold Shadow Pink
Stazon Black Ink Pad
Assorted Colored Pencils
Low Odor Mineral Spirits – for blending the colored pencils
Stubby Blending Tool
Clear Glue
Double Sided Tape
Foam Tape
Bright Pink Glitter
Silver Metallic Thread or Twine – about a 9” piece
Optional supplies: Sheet of Craft Foam and Stylus
Create Inked Paper using: Strathmore Mixed Media Paper ( or Watercolor Paper), Dylusions Spray Inks, Water and Joggles Wander Stencil.
Spray paper with water – randomly spray inks – spray on more water.
Lay an additional sheet of paper over inked page.
Run your hand over the top paper to blend the colors.
You will have 2 sheet of inked paper – one to use on this project and one to use on another project.
Mop up excess water / ink using a paper towel roll.
At this point it is time to “texture” the inked paper. Or you can do the “texturing” after you cut out your pieces. As it turns out I ended up “texturing” both at this point and again after I had cut out my pieces, using two different techniques.
Using the Joggles Wander Stencil and water, position the stencil over the inked paper and spray with water. Remove the stencil and let the water “work” for 30-60 seconds.
Mop up water with a paper towel roll.
The results will look something like this. Allow the paper to dry thoroughly. You can use a heat gun if you are impatient!!!
***Stamp – Color – Cut – Shape Embellishments***
Stamp out 6 of the Joggles Tutti Frutti Sunflowers. Color with colored pencils. I use low odor mineral spirits and a stubby blending tool to blend the colors.
Totally color 3 of the flowers. Color only the inner sections of the remaining 3.
Outline the flowers using the Gelly Roll Stardust Clear Pen.
Use the Gelly Roll Gold Shadow Pink Pen to color petal spots.
Cut out flowers.
Optional: Shape flowers using a sheet of craft foam for a base and a stylus. With the flowers face down, shape the flowers with the stylus using a circular motion while pressing down on the petals and leaves.
Attach the center of the flowers using foam tape. Add bright pink glitter to the centers using clear glue. (Not shown in this picture).
Stamp and Color Joggles Twined Couple. After coloring the stamped image I used a Gelly Roll Stardust Clear Pen to add texture. After cutting out the piece I used the Silver Metallic Thread to “sew” the couple together. Starting from the bottom and working up follow the printed lines on the image. Leave the “tail” attached – Do Not Cut it off. This will become the “leash” that you will attach to “Dwindled’s” hand once the pieces are attached to the card.
Stamp, Color and Cut Out the Joggles Tendrils. These were colored then outlined using the Gelly Roll Stardust Clear Pen.
Note: I stamp and color more than I’ll be using, just so I’ll have extras for mistakes and/or to use on other projects. Also the Tendrils on the left were modified by me to use as a leaf, these are not used in this project.
Stamp, Color and Cut Out Stampotique Dwindled. For texture I used a Gelly Roll Stardust Clear Pen on her legs. And a Gelly Roll Stardust Gold Pen on her dress and hair bow.
Note: I also stamped, colored and cut out the Stampotique Kitty which is not shown in any of the pictures, but is on the finished card.
***On to the Card part of this project***
Step Card Base: Using one of the 12 x 12 sheets of cardstock cut out a piece 7 x 12. Cut, Score and Fold per diagram. Note: Cut out a piece 2.25 x 6.5 from the leftover cardstock. You will use this piece as the “stop” on the interior of the card.
Easel Base: Using the remaining 12 x 12 sheet of cardstock cut out a piece 7 x 12. Cut, Score and Fold per diagram.
Cut the following pieces from your inked paper:
1 pc @ 5.75 x 6.75 – This will be for the inside of the card
1 pc @ 3.75 x 5.75
1 pc @ 2.75 x 2.75
1 pc @ 2.75 x 1.75
1 pc @ 2.75 x .75
1 pc @ 2 x 6.25 – This will be used for the “stop” for the inside of the card.
At this point I added more “texture” to the inked papers using Artist Paste, Tim Holtz Typo Stencil, Dylusions Hearts Border Stencil (5×8 size), Dylusions Holes Stencil (5×8 size) and a White Gelly Roll Pen.
Using Tim Holtz Typo Stencil position the stencil over the inked paper. Randomly spread Artist Paste over the stencil. Remove stencil and let dry. You may at this point use a heat tool to speed the drying time.
Using Dylusions Hearts Border Stencil follow the above technique and continue “texturing” the inked pieces.
Next using the Dylusions Holes Stencil (5×8 size) and a White Gelly Roll Pen randomly draw “holes” on the inked pieces. Note: You may draw the “holes” free hand if you wish. I’m just not very good at that.
Other doodling may be done at this time. I used a Gelly Roll Gold Shadow Pink Pen to draw a border on the pieces.
***Time to Assemble the Card***
Step Card Portion: Match up the inked pieces to the step sections. Using double sided tape place tape on the back of the inked pieces. Center pieces over the card sections and attach.
Note: Largest inked piece will be for the inside of the card.
Easel Portion: Apply double sided tape on the back side of the largest inked paper. Center inked paper over the inside of the card and attach.
Assemble the “Stop”: Using the 2.25 x 6.5 piece of cardstock and the 2 x 6.25 piece of inked paper attach the inked paper to the cardstock using double sided tape.
Attach the “stop” using foam tape to the bottom section of the inside of the easel portion.
Now attach the “step” portion to the “easel” portion of the card by applying double sided tape to the upper section ONLY of the “easel”. This will be the section facing up in pic 47.
Carefully line up the edges of the two pieces and press together.
This is what it should look like while lying flat.
This is what it should look like while in the standing position.
Make a sentiment piece. I used the Joggles Create Definition Stamp. Stamped onto a scrap of inked paper and layered onto a piece of scrap cardstock.
Attach Sentiment piece to the middle of the “stop” using foam tape.
Attach the “embellishments” using foam tape for the larger pieces and glue for the smaller pieces such as the Tendrils. Tie the “leash” to Dwindled’s hand and TA DA you’re finished!!!!
Happy Crafting!!!!

Love your work of art and the attention to the details. Had to smile at the photo of your inky fingers. Great pops of color – something I need to use more often. Thanks for the wonderful tutorial.
What an amazing card! I would be tickled bubblegum pink if this showed up in my mailbox. 🙂
Really like that stamp, Twined Couple–very surrealistic. Barb’s stamp designs are awesome. I only have one of the leaf designs, but I see I’m gonna want some more.
