DT Post – Kim Schofield’s Itty Bitty Stencilled ATCs
September 1, 2017

Hi all! Kim here with you today sharing a fun project using the Joggles Itty Bitty ATC stencils. Stencils made just for ATCs…I LOVE it!

Let’s get started with our materials. I cut three ATC size cards (2.5 x 3.5 inches) from manila cardstock. I’m also using three of the Joggles Itty Bitty ATC stencils, white embossing powder, an embossing buddy, and embossing ink. During this project, the embossing powder will enable me to do a resist technique.

Supplies:

VersaMark Watermark Clear Ink Pad

Tim Holtz Distress Ink Pads: Wild Honey; Broken China; Gathered Twigs; Vintage Photo;

Joggles Itty Bitty ATC Stencils: Bumpy Ride; Winter Tree; Leaf Layers;

Archival Ink Pad – Jet Black

Dina Wakley Media White Gesso

Ranger Heat It Craft Tool

Other: thin brush; manila card stock; black card stock; white embossing powder; Wendy Vecchi

Carnation Red Embossing Powder and Mat Mini Hearts; embossing buddy;

Here is my process:

I’m going to start by taping my Joggles Itty Bitty stencils to the manila card stock using low tack tape. This will help keep the stencils in place when I apply the ink.

Since the stencils have some dimension to them, I need to press my ink pad very firmly onto the surface to ensure that the ink gets into the open areas. Pay special attention to the tree, which has very thin lines.

Once my ink has been applied, pour white embossing power over the entire area. (Coffee filters are a great way to contain embossing powder, which always seems to fly everywhere!)

Once I heat set the embossing powders using a craft tool, I grabbed a bunch of Distress Inks and blending tools. I also die cut a small circle from scrap paper to act as a sun (or moon) behind the tree.

Here is a look at my three ATCs with the ink added. The white embossing powder resists the ink! Once you go over the entire area with ink, use a dry cloth to remove any ink that may be sitting on top of the embossed areas.

For my sun, I first added a light covering of ink, placed my circle over that area and then reinked with a darker ink. The ink colors I ended up using were Wild Honey, Gathered Twigs, Vintage Photo, and Broken China. (I used Crushed Olive at the bottom of the tree card, but that will get covered up by my hills, which you’ll see in the next photo.)

Next, I added some stamping using Archival Ink in Jet Black. The Archival Ink will dry on top of the embossed areas. The bird stamp is from an old set from a friend of mine, and the dashed lines are from a Wendy Vecchi set, but you could use any background stamp to add some stamping. The tiny hearts are Mat Mini hearts from Wendy Vecchi which were embossed with her new Carnation Red embossing powder. The tree card got two hand cut hills and a sentiment, and I also added some white snow by splattering watered down gesso.

Here is the finished piece, which has been mounted onto a piece of black cardstock cut to 4.5” x 10”. I only added a few sentiments from a Tim Holtz Big Chat sticker book. And below are some more close-up photos.

I hope you enjoyed today’s project! I had such a wonderful time creating this piece! These stencils are fantastic for making small art pieces and you could use finished ATCs for trading, on cards, tags, or in art journals. Happy Crafting!

Oh wow, Kim! I just love these. Great imagery and words! I would never have thought to stamp on top of embossing.
