Hi everyone. It’s Karen here today to share my new home decor item. I originally thought I would make something for Christmas but as the holidays will soon be over, I decided to use the star stencil for a celebration wall hanging in patriotic colors. I used Joggles Shooting Star Stencil, star foam stamp, and grunge star border rubber stamp with a variety of inks and glimmer mists.
Supply List:
Joggles Stencil – Shooting Stars 20-33709
Joggles Foam Stamp – Star Set #1 [57017]
Joggles / Margaret Applin Designs Cling Mounted Rubber Stamp – Grunge Stars Border [56778]
Tattered Angels Glimmer Mists – Stone
Adirondack Color Wash – Denim
Inkssentials Mini Mister
Tim Holtz Distress Ink Pads – Barn Door
Inkssentials Glossy Accents
Inkssentials NonStick Craft Sheet
Ranger Heat It Craft Tool
Other Supplies: Brilliance Ink Pad – Platinum Planet (Tsukineko), white & red card stock, thick cardboard, red glitter card stock, twine, water.
Directions:
Cover your work surface with a NonStick craft sheet or copy paper which can later be used in other projects. The stencil will be used as a stamp to transfer ink to the paper creating an inverse image of the stars. Place the stencil down and mist with Adirondack Denim Color Wash. Next, lightly mist the stencil with water and move it onto a clean NonStick Craft Sheet.
Carefully place a sheet of white card stock over the inky stencil and rub lightly with your fingers to make sure the paper is flat against the stencil and the ink transfers. Lift paper off and set aside to dry.
Clean & dry the stencil thoroughly. Then re-position the stencil over the dry paper being careful to align the star images.
Spray lightly with Tattered Angels Stone Glimmer Mist. Set aside to dry.
Clean & dry the stencil thoroughly. Position the stencil randomly over the paper. Mist with Denim Spray until the desired intensity of color is achieved.
Continue re-positioning the stencil to add more stars. This procedure will create more layers and add depth to the design. Set aside to dry.
Next, use Platinum Planet Ink to stamp the Grunge Star Border onto a 6×6 inch piece of white card stock, creating 4-5 parallel rows.
Place the star stencil over the stamped star stripes and apply Barn Door Distress Ink using a sponge ink tool.
Continue to re-position the stencil and apply ink selectively until you complete a diagonal burst of stars.
Add blue stars using Adirondack Denim Color Wash Spray. (Tip: Stretch your supplies – when mist has dried on the stencil, use a wet paper towel to wipe over it which reactivates the mist and then use that paper towel to apply color through the stencil) .
Apply a generous coating of Glossy Accents clear glaze to a random scattering of stars and set aside to dry.
Attach red card stock to the wall hanging board. Use a pin to pierce through the paper to create holes and add the twine to hang it. Adhere the blue stencilled star paper centered on the red board.
Mat the 6×6″ grunge star border square with red glitter cardstock and add it to the lower right corner of the wall hanging.
Finally, stamp some large stars with one of Joggles Star Foam Stamps using Barn Door Distress Ink.
Next, stencil a selection of stars using Adirondack Denim Color Wash. Fussy cut them and leave some of the stars with a thin white border.
Embellish the background with various sizes of stars using dimensional foam tape or squares to randomly adhere them to the design.
I hope you have enjoyed my tutorial using a Joggles stencil to create a solid image, as well as creating a hollow reverse image by pressing the paper onto a misted stencil. I also hope you will give stencils a try because they are so versatile and can create crisp, classic images, as well as more distressed designs.
Thanks for visiting! Happy Crafting in 2017!
