When I set out to create the pieces for today’s video, I did so with a an idea of how I wanted to proceed and what I thought the results might look like. I played for a while and discovered that my best laid plans were not producing what I expected.
Originally I thought I was going to work with my preloaded Detail Water Brushes; the ones that are filled with various inks and sprays, and with Twinkling H2Os to add color and sparkle. I played with them for a bit and while I liked the results, the look was not what I imagined. Not bad in any way, and you can get great results with them both or with other paints, but not what I was seeing in my mind’s eye. I put everything away (I’m easily distracted) and brought out my Derwent Coloursoft pencils and began to lightly color some of the elements. Added a bit of shading. Blended colors for a softer look. Tested various combinations to approximate Caucasian flesh. Played and played, and then played some more.
As I was doing all of that I began to really enjoy the process – what is currently being termed “adult coloring” – it’s a lot of fun! I also realized that it’s easy to take basic coloring and enhance the look with some subtle shading and blending.
Once you’ve finished coloring and embellishing the vignettes, it comes time to decide what to do with them. The obvious choice is to incorporate them into cards and you’ll see me do that toward the end of the video. We have smaller sized cards measuring about 4.25″ x 5.5″, which are perfect for the size of the elements on the Paintables papers. Layer the vignette with some scrapbook papers and adhere to the card front. Add a sentiment to the inside and that quickly you have a card to gift to someone special.
You’ll also see that the vignettes work well on journal pages. I used mine in one of the 5″ x 5″ Global Art Materials journals and love the look.

Hi Barb….
My friend Glenda sent this to me… I love how you colored my art play paintables. I usually do such bold and wild colors. It was nice to see them done so simple and soft!
Enjoy and keep coloring…..

Hi. I just ordered a few of the paintable seets, can’t wait to try them out! Are the sheets lie watercolor type paper? Wasn’t sure what “laid texture” meant.
Thanks!
Beth
I choose Derwent over PrismaColor, and in the process went against the trend years ago. I like that they are a bit harder and the colors are saturated in a different way. Your pastels are beautiful, but Derwent sure does deep colors as well.
