My Weeks 23 and 24 Art Journal Adventure page, which featured circular flowers and mandalas, caused a bit of a stir with a number of folks writing to ask how I create them. Between those emails and the interest expressed in the AJA Facebook group, I decided to film the process so anyone who was curious could give it a try.
It’s not difficult and as you’ll see, the most important tools you’ll use are circle templates. I used two because between them there is a wide range of sizes, including some very large ones. As I go along you’ll see why they’re so important.
For today I have kept it simple and used only black PITT Pens, but you’ll see my journal page and will notice that I have used other colors in places. These too are PITT Pens, in the S – Superfine tip. The supplies are listed below the video and in there is a link to the PITT Pens. You’ll find the colors in the S tip there, along with the black ones.

I loved this instruction, You explained and demonstrated it so well.. People always laugh at me for being slow, If I go faster I am sure to mess it up.. I believe that those who just want to be quick would not do something as detailed as this.. I learned a lot. Thanks for the demo.

Barbara, thank you so very much for taking the time to make this video. I knew, in order to make varying sizes of circles, I would need to make circle templates, as I had not thought of using my circle template sheet. Sometimes, I just need to be reminded of the simpler route…. Your flowers and mandalas are beautiful, and I look forward to making many of my own. They will give me hours of enjoyment and distraction, as I continue to sit with my dad, while he sleeps for hours on end, at our Hospice House.
Thank you so much for sharing your process. Your creations are always so beautiful. I just need practice to draw curves and circles!
Thank you, love these circle designs.
