The 2017 Art Journal Adventure – Week 40
      October 2, 2017

Hi everyone. It’s Bonnie here today with the Art Journal Adventure prompt for Week 40. This week I chose the theme Triangles and I decided to include the three sided shape as well as emphasizing the design technique, visual triangle, which I use often to create flow, provide balance, and help the eye travel over the entire page. It consists of three spots or points of the imaginary triangle which are connected in one or more ways such as colour, shape, dimension, or pattern. The eye looks for similarities and will travel the page finding these three points which helps it take in the entire design.

I began by brayering Liquitex Bright Aqua Green and Brilliant Yellow Green acrylic paint through Kaisercraft Abstract Triangles Designer Template onto my gel plate. The stencil was removed and the triangles were printed onto 7.5 x 9.75 inch mixed media paper. This was repeated to cover most of the background.

To begin creating the visual triangle, I pulled some medium Sticky Snippet Circles from a previously decorated sheet and applied them to my three triangle points. These points are united by colour, pattern, and shape. They are spread apart so that the imaginary triangle would cover the majority of the page.

To make the three spots link together even more obviously, I stamped Carabelle Studio Letter Background Art Stamp with Jet Black Archival and Joggles/Margaret Applin Designs Vintage Correspondence Rubber Stamp with Manganese Blue Archival Ink to add texture and build out the “points”.

Using black gesso, I also stencilled rows of triangles (ArtC Words & Icons stencil) near each cluster. These alone would be enough for a strong visual triangle.

I knew that I was going to feature one of the pandas from Joggles Panda Portraits Collage Sheets so I turned to Joggles/Margaret Applin Designs Flora & Fronds stencil #1 to create a little nod to bamboo. I traced the design onto black cardstock and fussy cut before adhering it in place.

After fussy cutting one of the larger pandas from Panda Portraits #3, I added rosy cheeks with Tim Holtz Worn Lipstick Distress Ink and Glossy Accents to Panda’s eyes. Turquoise Stickles was added to the berries above her head and also to the flower centers. She was matted on black cardstock and fussy cut a second time leaving a narrow black border before foam tape was added to pop her up.

The wording was printed onto white cardstock, cut into individual words, and matted with black. Foam tape was used to adhere the words. A doodled border with triangles inserted every once in a while was added to the outside edge of the background before the edges were inked with Jet Black Archival. I just had to sneak a few more triangles in there…LOL.

White paint pen dots were added to the foliage fronds and the page was adhered to the black background common to all my pages in this journal.

Now it’s your turn to run with the Triangle theme, whether you choose to include the geometric shape, play with the visual triangle, or do something completely different. I’m excited to see where you take this prompt and hope you have as much fun with it as I did 🙂

This is a fun page! I wonder why you first stencil on to a gel plate and take a print rather than just stenciling directly onto your paper? I love the extra black border around the panda and the words, that really makes it pop!
