The 2016 Art Journal Adventure – Week 24
      June 13, 2016

Because I took on too much for Week 23, I ended up having this page span two weeks.  I just never had enough time to complete the page in those 7 days.  I’ve been called an over-achiever before…

This is where I left off last week:

      aja-week-23-12

And where my Week 24 journey began.

There were a lot of comments in the Facebook group from people who thought the page was finished as it was, or could be with a bit more done to it.  My original plan was to have the words in the middle and the rest of the background filled with doodles.  I never even considered leaving white space till it was mentioned, and the more that I considered the possibility, the more I liked the idea.

I decided to complete the circles I’d penciled in and then leave the rest un-doodled.  The circles were all made using one of the Pickett Circle Templates.  See the Giant Circles by clicking here.  The Regular Circles are here on the site, and the Small Circles can be seen here.

      aja-week-24-1

The changes here are the partial shape in the upper right is finished (including the addition of color in the center), the small flower in the cluster of three at the bottom right is finished, and I’ve begun to work on one other.  Which is great until I slip with the pen…

      aja-week-24-2

Ooops.  I hate when that happens.  I was using one of the circle templates and the pen went wonky, all on its own.  I had nothing to do with it even though I was holding the pen in one hand and the template against the page with the other.  Really.  It wasn’t me.

      aja-week-24-3

Mistakes like this are design choices that you weren’t even aware you had.  I could get all annoyed and pissed off… or make this a design choice.  I actually did both, but you didn’t hear that from me.

Since I can’t fix it any way other than to cover it, I made the design choice to create a solid ring.  This is where a Black PITT Brush Pen comes in really handy.  It fills in these kinds of shapes way faster (and more neatly when I’m wielding the pens) than if I used an S, F, or M tip.  You can see all of those pointy tipped PITT Pens by clicking here.

      aja-week-24-5

There’s the element finished and I like it.  I’m not ‘dancing in the dark’ liking it, but it’s not bad given the pen slip!  What I really like it the element in the upper left corner; the one with the open circles on the black ring and pointy thingys on the outside.

Almost finished… there’s only one more penciled circle waiting to be finished.

      aja-week-24-6

And it’s done.  I put color in the last element to kind of balance things and overall I’m happy with the page.  I’m also happy that it’s done, but I think I will miss messing with it. I really do enjoy creating those flower circle/mandala thingys.

Really spectacular! Love all of the designs you created to make “flowers”. How do you keep all the elements like the petal shape or small circles so consistent and even????

Can’t wait for my templates and pens to arrive this afternoon!

I use circle templates penciled in to align most of the elements. Planning a video that details the process! I think it will be ready for the 22nd. I think!

Quitting while one is ahead is always a good thing if it can be accomplished. And this time you did just that. The open spaces are just great and sets off the whole design. Good job, girl.

I love how each flower is different. How do you come up with all the ideas for them? Genius! This is just beautiful. I stopped at 5 circles as I was out of ideas and my hands were tired! I am letting the page rest for a few days before calling it done. Maybe it will call to me again .

Love that you didn’t color in all of the circles. This is much more stunning!

“Be Brave” is right. You were and it paid out in spades! It’s just so fun that you share your talent and whimsy and, heck, maybe it’ll get my mojo back again…

i absolutely LOVE this!! i am torn a lot between florals and doodling, so this has lots of good ideas to use in other ways. question–i have several delicate masks–esp. Balzer’s Tree Bits–that i am not sure how to use. you can’t draw around them as they move too much and if i lay it on my paper and spray it there is paint in areas i don’t want it to be. maybe they will only work in collage?? thanks for any tips.
