This class is for students who have PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS ONLY and is not for the full version (CS) of Photoshop!!
Users of PCs and Mac computers are welcome - the lessons contain details for both.
Photoshop is the most popular image editing program available, but its
many features can be daunting. Here is just enough to get you well
started, with some fun projects to help you learn. The course assumes you have the inexpensive Photoshop Elements rather than the $650 full program. You need not have any experience with Elements.
Week 1: Just Enough Interface. All those tools, all those menu items!
Don't stress; I'll give you just enough to get you going. As you progress
in the class you will learn more and more. For now, I'll show you 9 of the
22 tools and a quick runthrough of the most useful menu items. You’ll
learn a quick and easy way of correcting the color and brightness of your
images. I'll have sample images to practice on, or you can use your own.
Week 2: Photos for Print or Web. I'll guide you through the confusion of
image resolution, picture sizes and printing. Why does my picture look so
huge in an email? Why does that web graphic look so terrible when I print it? I'll show you how to squeeze out 90% of the file size of a picture
while still keeping its onscreen size and quality. Your email attachments
will zip through cyberspace and still look great when your friends view
them. I'll talk about printing your pictures and getting the most out of
your printer.
Week 3: The Playground of Filters. Elements’ filters are powerful
image-altering routines. They are addictive, hypnotic… and there are
dozens of them! I’ll give you enough to get you started and show you some of the artistic effects you can make with them. I’ll also go into more detail about the Paintbrush, one of the most basic, yet complicated,
tools.
Week 4: Borders and Type. Let's have some fun! I'll show you three ways to make artistic borders on your photos, and how to put custom type on them. The class project will be a greeting card you can send to friends. Along the way, you'll learn about layers, transparency and blending modes.
Week 5: Make a Sketch from your Photo. This week's assignment simulates a sketch in graphite pencil or an ink outline with watercolor wash. This class gives you more about filters and introduces the Filter Gallery. We'll wrap up with a review of what you've learned and how you can put it to work on your own projects.
Students should have a computer and some version of Photoshop Elements (version 3.0 or newer). You must have the software already installed on your computer when class begins. The class assumes that you are familiar with your computer and will not instruct students on the basics of navigating the operating system, how to work with files, etc.
Your monitor must have a resolution of 1024x768 or higher. (To find your screen resolution in Windows XP, go to Start>Control Panel> Display and click the Settings tab.)
You don't have to have a new computer with lots of memory, but the more advanced your system, the better. Having more than a minimum of memory ("RAM") will let you work on larger and more complex projects. A color inkjet printer is useful but not essential.

You need to be able to browse the internet, know how to download and save a document to your PC's hard drive, and understand how to open and save email attachments. It is your responsibility to learn these skills before the class begins.
Please be certain you are comfortable with all of these skills. Class fees
will not be refunded once the class has begun.
