This class is not currently scheduled to run.
This is primarily a fabric painting workshop where you will learn several techniques for applying pigment inks to fabric - but at the end of the class you will have also learned several quilting 'tips and tricks' that I have used successfully for 10+ years. And you will have a bright summery placemat handpainted and sewn by you! Seeing a goldfinch land on the iris outside my window and no camera at hand, I recreated the scene by painting on fabric and developed this pattern. The amazing contrast of the bright yellow goldfinch against the purple iris makes this a fun and appealing piece.
Lesson 1 - We will select and prepare our background fabric and discuss two different techniques for transferring the pattern provided with the class - and the different effects these techniques produce. I will share the steps I used to create this pattern, to encourage you to create and paint from your own photographs.
Lesson 2 - We will paint the iris and goldfinch. To apply the pigment ink successfully, you will learn a few simple 'tricks' and technques. Then we will get a little 'artsy' and learn some things professional artists use to add depth, create shadows and highlights. And to make the goldfinch come alive - I will teach you my technique for painting a bird's eye.
Lesson 3 - We will finish the placemat by adding accent fabrics to it, cutting it to size, layering it and quilting. Traditional binding makes a beautiful edge for the placemat and I will share a quick easy way to match and sew the two ends of the binding along with my preferred method of all machine sewing to attach a binding. But we will also learn another way to finish this piece which doesn't use a binding.
I would encourage you to use a small project like this to practise your machine quilting - or - to use a small project like this to begin machine quilting. I still consider myself a 'student' of freehand machine quilting and will share the 'tips and tricks' that have worked for me in this final step to finish your handpainted, handguided machine quilted Iris and Goldfinch placemat.
