This class is scheduled to begin on September 24, 2009.
There are no rules in Crazy Quilting which allows for tremendous
freedom but also has some beginners stumped as to where to start and
how to control what they do to start! This workshop will give students
the opportunity to learn how to piece, develop and heavily hand
embellish a crazy quilt block with hand embroidery, beading and
exploring different embellishing techniques while solving design,
composition and colour issues. You may use the class to learn the
basics of Crazy Quilting or explore more deeply the underlying design
issues associated with working in such a heavily embellished style.
Covered in this workshop are techniques such as piecing, hand
embroidery, beading and embellishment as well as handling the design
elements of composition, balance and colour as applied to Crazy
Quilting.
This class is suitable for beginners to intermediate stitchers and
crazy quilters.
Class Structure:
Week 1: Introduction to Crazy Quilting. Collecting your goodies
together. Fabric selection and block assembly. Colour selection
decisions and basic composition tricks applied to Crazy Quilting.
Week 2: Starting to embellish the block. Hand embroidered seam
treatments and embroidery that consolidates composition. Building on
basic hand stitching techniques, developing combination stitches and
adding variety and interest to a block through the choice of colour,
thread and scale.
Week 3: Working with motifs. Motif selection, size, balance and
placement. Transferring designs to fabric. Different possible hand
embroidery techniques and treatments such as silk ribbon embroidery
and using highly textured stitches such as bullion knots, cast-on
stitch and drizzle stitch.
Week 4: Taking the eye on a journey by building up visual texture.
Working with lace, ribbons and braids. Further embellishing and design
considerations as blocks are embellished.
Week 5: Encrusting a block. Building up texture working with buttons
and beads. The implications of highly textured areas for the
composition and design elements of a block. Areas to highlight in
order to produce a block that reads in a holistic manner although it
may be 'busy' and heavily encrusted with embellishment.
Week 6: More possible embellishment techniques and combinations of
techniques. Methods to pull the block together. General tips, tricks,
advice on balancing the many elements of design active on a crazy
quilt block. Where to go from here and nurture your own creativity.
