Sleep, Sleep Canine Collage - Page 2
by Jessica Rich

I started by following Lydia’s directions for coating a
piece of canvas board with colors I love.
I wasn’t sure how those colors would look with my picture,
but I did it anyway.
Though I painted the base colors with the board in a landscape
orientation, I ended up with a portrait orientation.
Just goes to show that you never know how things will work
out.

While I waited for the base colors to dry, I
started to assemble some components for the collage. To create
the deckled edge banner with the words “Sleep, Sleep…” on it, I look
a piece of bark paper, sketched out the shape of the object and went
over the lines with a brush with water.
When the paper is wet through, simply pull the paper apart at
the wet lines.

Once I had what I was looking for, I began to lay
out various pieces on the board.
When I was generally happy with the layout, I started to glue
down the components, using Yes! Glue.
To adhere the woven bark paper, I used The Ultimate Glue, but
I think that Yes! Glue would have worked just as well.

With the bits of paper in place, I started
painting in vines and leaves.
The painted leaves mimic the simple, graphic look of the cut
paper leaves. Drawing
color inspiration from the red in the postage stamp at the top left
of the piece, I added in big, simple red flowers.
I swirled colors together until I got a look I liked.
