Beginning on Sunday July 18, 2004 the next two challenges, Christmas in July & The Magical Mask, will again focus on embellishments, but each in their own unique way.

Don't forget to go to page 2 to read about the details of both challenges!.  Click here to get to page 2!

The Magical Mask Challenge is based on a simple mask shape that I drew.  You will be provided with the pattern as part of the kit and are free to embellish the mask however you choose.  There are two color choices available: copper/purple and teal/pastels.  Here is my as yet incomplete sample of the copper/purple version...

The design is kind of a mishmash of elements as I was playing with several ideas all in the same sample.  I had plans to create a nicer model, but as usually happens lately, I ran out of time.  There is MUCH more that I could have done if I'd had the time.  I wanted to make this more like the masks that are held up to the face at a costume ball, with a painted and decorated handle and ribbons and streamers and...  well, you get the idea!

The next sample is the barest beginnings of what I what I plan to do with the teal/pastels kit...

The "eyebrows" are a couple of my hand painted Venise Lace appliques.  I got a start on some beading and really like the way this one is going.

Note: October 23, 2004.  The challenge is over, but you can see the masks that were entered in the challenge by clicking here.

In addition to the Magical Mask Challenge there is also a Christmas in July Challenge which will begin on July 18, 2004 and run concurrently with the Magical Mask Challenge.

The Christmas in July Doll Challenge is based on Julie McCullough's newest pattern called Santa Magic.  "Christmas in July" is a theme that you often see at this time of the year and I figured it was silly to buck the tradition!  Julie has created another winning design with this pattern, and she has also very generously provided you with an extra incentive to try the challenge.  For a limited period of time I am able to offer an alternate set of directions for the Santa Magic pattern.  Instead of creating the doll as Santa, you can instead turn him into a Christmas Tree with a Santa face!  How cool is that?

This is Santa Magic as you make him with the basic pattern...

And this is Santa Magic made as the Santa Christmas Tree using the alternate instructions...

I can't decide which I like better!  What's great is that you don't have to.  If you buy the Santa Magic pattern between July 18, 2004 and August 18, 2004 you will receive the alternate instructions to make him as the Santa Christmas Tree.  You may make either version as your entry for the challenge!  The choice is up to you.

Note: October 23, 2004.  The challenge is over, but you can see the Santa dolls that were entered in the challenge by clicking here.

So there ya go... You can make a Santa, a mask, or both if you're really inspired!!  On the next page you will find all of the challenge rules and other boring, but necessary bits of information that you'll need to know in order to participate.  Click here to go to page 2 and all the fine print!!
